The Westbound California Zephyr is running on time as it knocks down the signal at west Crescent. Gross Reservoir stands in the background.

After shooting Amtrak at the west end of Crescent, I decided to head toward the east end for the next westbound. That turned out to be the MNYGJ which was barely making 12 MPH up the hill!

Eight units are on the point of the MNYGJ as it pulls west through Crescent. Despite the fact there are eight units, only three of them are actually "loading" (working). The last five are being moved to Glenwood Springs for mid-train coal power.

A whole lot of power leads up the MNYGJ, although only five of the eight units are online. The train is only going 12 MPH and is rounding the curve just south of Tunnel 29.

This was the proverbial "Money Shot" that I was going for on this particular day! This eastbound coal load is leaving Cliff and crossing over South Boulder Creek on the bridge at MP 36.45. Just ahead, the train will enter Tunnel 29.

This coal train will be heading east on the Limon Sub after it reaches Denver. The three mid-train swing helpers will but cut out at North Yard, but this fine looking C44AC-CTE will stay with the train. Here, it is crossing over the bridge at MP 36.45 just west of Tunnel 29.

Hot? Perhaps this picture will help to cool you off some! Between the snow and the winds, it felt like it was barely 0°F outside. The westbound MNYGJ breaks through a burst of blowing snow on the approach to the crossing at Tolland.

It's about time to bid a fond farewell to the MNYGJ. The train has an approach diverging as it heads into the Moffat Tunnel. At Winter Park, the train will take the siding to meet an eastbound coal load.

A lot of things have changed in this shot in the last fifteen years. The milepost sign has changed. The signal has been replaced (note the new LED lights). There is a new camera bridge in front of the tunnel. However, this westbound is charging into the bore as countless other westbounds have for years, and hopefully will for years to come.

An eastbound coal load has a clear signal down the mainline at Rollins. The coal train was loaded as the West Elk mine on the North Fork Branch.

The last shot of the day has UP 6961 (formerly an AC6000CW now converted to an AC44/60CW) crossing over South Boulder Creek at the bridge at MP 37.50.
