At the west end of Cliff, an eastbound coal load went into emergency and stopped right on the switch. The train had problems with the first (of three) swing units that took about three hours to correct!

The last in a parade of five westbounds to come out of Denver, this coal empty has a clear signal on the main track at Cliff. Ahead of this westbound is another coal empty, the MNYPV, the Ski Train, and Amtrak 5!

At the west end of Cliff, a coal train led by eight units blasts west along South Boulder Creek. This train was supposed to leave North Yard ahead of Amtrak, but after going into emergency twice when trying to leave, DS-86 held the train for Amtrak, the MNYPV, and the Ski Train!

The Ski Train F40PH's blow some extra exhaust in the distance and the Ski Train speeds up to reach track speed. Here at Cliff, track speed increases a bit for westbounds as the Tunnel District is now passed.

Two UP DPU's head east (away from the camera) on the end of a loaded coal train. The train stopped at the grade crossing at Cliff (at the east end) for a quick crew change. Meanwhile, Espee 9794 leads a unit pipe train tied down on the siding at Cliff.

This is about the best shot I could get on the "sunny" side of this unit pipe train. Unfortunately, the west end of Cliff is not the best place to get shots lighting-wise, and this unit pipe train led by Espee GP60 #9794 was tied down and not going anywhere for quite some time!

Two CSX "Dark Future" ES44DCs help to power a loaded unit pipe train west on the Moffat. These GEVOs are less than three months old and it was a rare treat to see them so far from their home. Unfortunately, I was stuck with some rather awful back-lighting...

You don't see this everyday! In fact, these days, it'll probably never happen again! Unpatched Espee GP60 #9794 leads two CSX ES44DCs on a unit pipe train at Cliff. I can't even remember the last time I saw a mainline train led by a four axle unit prior to this shot. The train was tied down on the siding due to maintenance ahead.

I wasn't sure how this shot was going to come out at the time I took it, but I am actually very happy with the results. UP 6067 leads 13 units (only three of which were online and working) in a light power move between North Yard and Grand Junction. These units will be added as mid-train and end-train helpers in Grand Junction for coal loads coming east.

Now that UP has again started running the MNYRO/MRONY (Manifest trains between North Yard and Roper), manifest trains are becoming more common on the Moffat. In fact, on this particular Saturday, the MNYRO-28 met the MRONY-26 at Cliff. Not only was coal completely missing from the scene, but so was the sound of a four-stroke engine! The eastbound MRONY had two SD70M's, an SD40-2, and a patched SP SD40M-2 for power. The westbound had four SD70M's and they were working hard. Here is the MNYRO approaching the west end of the siding.

The shortest tunnel along the (former) Grande's Tunnel District is Tunnel 29. It is just 79 feet in length! An eastbound coal load wraps through a small S-curve and passes thruogh the short tunnel.

This eastbound coal load is about to cross over the South Beaver Creek Road grade crossing, just west of the siding of Cliff. The train is creeping along at 18 MPH, and several cars are showing the slowing effort as smoke comes off the super-hot brake shoes.

I sat above the east portal of tunnel 29 for nearly an hour waiting for the Ski Train to arrive. But when it did, it was worth the wait!
