It is quite a hike to get to this spot, but it is well worth the effort! From this wonderful perch, not only can we observe this eastbound coal load crossing South Boulder Creek, but we can see a manifest in the siding at Tolland, and of course the Continental Divide! The divide is shrouded in clouds as a September storm pushes its way east.

After meeting the westbound MNYRO at Tolland, this eastbound coal train is still on the roll as it continues on the main. With the compression of a 300mm lens, you can clear see the mid-train swing helpers coming up toward the end of the manifest at Tolland.

As the technology has become more and more reliable, Union Pacific is running (remote controlled) DPU's on manifests in addition to coal trains. The North Yard to Roper manifest was no exception on this morning, with a C44AC-CTE and an SD9043MAC shoving on the tail end.

About a half mile from the east switch of Tolland, the tracks cross over from the far side of South Boulder Creek to the near side (with respect to the road). Coming around the curve to the bridge which takes the tracks across, the MNYRO is on the move. The train will enter the siding at Tolland to wait for an eastbound coal train that was in the Moffat Tunnel at the time this picture was taken.

A couple of branches from an aspen tree frame the lead unit on the westbound Zephyr quite nicely as the train head west on the main at Tolland.

It is still a few weeks too soon for the aspens to change color, even in the Colorado high country. However, this is still a nice scene as the westbound California Zephyr has clear signals through Tolland. Three more miles and the passengers will be stuck in the darkness of the Moffat Tunnel for about 15 minutes.

Hot? Perhaps this picture will help to cool you off some! Between the snow and the winds, it felt like it was barely 0°F outside. The westbound MNYGJ breaks through a burst of blowing snow on the approach to the crossing at Tolland.

Even though I wasn't on the correct side of the tracks to get the long side of the train properly lit, who can resist grabbing a shot of a train making its way through a huge grouping of gold aspen trees!? This train is leaving the siding at Tolland westbound after having met an eastbound here.

I knew an eastbound was coming, but I was expecting a coal load. So I was rather happy to see the eastbound MRONY being led by an SD70ACe and a C44-9W coming out of the Moffat. I was hoping for more fall colors in the shot, but the wind has already done an excellent job taking the leaves off most of the aspens around the tunnel.

This coal empty is charging west through Tolland in perfect afternoon light. It met an eastbound BNSF manifest which received a relief crew four hours earlier. Unfortunately, a parade of westbounds has kept the crew waiting patiently for their turn to head east.

Not the best light for this shot, but with the blue sky and the lingering snow, I decided to include it. Also of interest is the trio of mid-train swing helpers. Rumor has it that the cars ahead of these units are headed for Roper. The cars behind are headed for Grand Junction. After arriving in Grand Junction, the train can be cut ahead of the first swing helper and the front half can continue west to Utah.

This train seemed very familiar when I took this picture! The reason being that I shot the exact same train less than 24 hours earlier between Leyden and Rocky. Two derailments resulted it in taking 36 hours and four crews to get the train from North Yard to this spot at Tolland.

One last shot of UP 1989 leading the westbound Snow Bus, sitting on the siding at East Portal. The train is scheduled to head west to Phippsburg, CO. This will mark the first time the Rio Grande Heritage unit has ever traveled on the Craig Branch. This will mean that the Rio Grande Heritage unit will have finally traveled on all of its namesake major routes, save Tennessee Pass (which no unit has run on in well over 10 years).

About a quarter of a mile away from the Moffat Tunnel, this Snow Bus has come to a stop on the siding at East Portal. DS-82 has informed the train that they will be meeting at least one (and possibly two) trains here before they will get their change to run through the tunnel. The temperature outside for this shot was a rather brisk 2°F (-17°C)...

The leaves haven't started to change colors for the fall yet, but there is still a bit of grande gold in the mountains today! The second P42 on the Zephyr wouldn't load upon arrival in Salt Lake City and UP just happened to have UP 1989 available to help out.
