An eastbound UP special crosses over a trestle in Watkins, CO on the Limon Sub. The short train is headed east of the Mississippi. The first electric unit will be delivered to Pennsylvania and the next three are headed to Maryland.

About five miles east of the siding of Mesa, an eastbound coal train descends downgrade while crossing over a short wooden trestle. With the decline in demand for coal, this is a scene that is actually getting harder to capture!

The last view of this interesting UP oil train with BNSF power comes at this short but long bridge at Watkins, CO. I'm not entirely sure if there is a creek here, or if this primarily a flood plain. If you know, feel free to share in the comments!

There is a long curve and nice wooden bridge just a few miles west of Watkins, CO. There is some rain in the area as the next week is predicted to bring a LOT of precipitation in Colorado. The train is moving at a descent clip...in fact, if you look closely, you can see a bit of coal dust blowing off the hoppers on the left side of the shot.

An eastbound coal train just west of Watkins, CO has an eastern visitor helping out on the point. It was good to frame up a coal train in the viewfinder as it is getting harder to find and shoot coal train, particularly UP coal trains, in the Denver area.

A few miles west of Watkins, the KP wraps around a nice curve, crossing over a short bridge. The bridge is there to allow water to drain beneath the tracks, which are on a fill.

In the town of Watkins, there is a nifty little bridge bridge that crosses a river bed (I'm not sure which one). Several years ago, Watkins was going to be the location of a new UP Yard (relocated from 36th Street in Denver). However, as of 2010, those plans have not yet come together.

As this coal loads continues to pull east onto the plains, the mountains slowly sink down into the horizon. This curve here is just a few miles west of the town of Watkins, CO.

An eastbound coal load crosses a bridge near the town of Watkins, about thirty miles east of Denver (or, at least, 36th Street). The train came down off the Moffat and, after a bit of a hold-over on a Bypass track, the train continues its journey east on the KP.

The man behind the controls leans out of the engine to take a look at the track up ahead. The passenger special will make a trip east in Kansas, then southwest into New Mexico, and east in Texas, then eventually back to Cheyenne over the course of the next month.
