Three P42DCs lead the Zephyr west at Utah Jct, under what might just be the last-remaining Rio Grande signal bridge on the former Rio Grande. The searchlight signals on the bridge are also some of the last Rio Grande signals still in operation in Colorado.

The California Zephyr is on UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub, crossing over the diamond for the Belt Lead at Utah Jct, at the north end of North Yard. This is the second consecutive day that the train is running with three P42DCs. Not sure why...perhaps just a power move to California.

AMTK 190 passes underneath one of the only remaining Rio Grande signal bridges still in existence. This is at Utah Junction at the north end of North Yard. The Zephyr is on the main track, the North Yard siding the next track to the right. The next track to the right is actually the North Yard lead, and it is not in CTC limits. This is why there are only two sets of signals on the bridge.

The morning Zephyr, running right on time, is passing by the north end of North Yard. The train is just about to cross the diamond with the UP Belt Line. Note the UP train, the MNYGR, getting ready to head for the Greeley Sub and, eventually, Green River, WY.

An empty oil train just received a light at C&S Junction on Bypass to head west on the Moffat. The crew is starting the journey to Bond, where there will be a crew change to then take the train on the Grand Junction. Without changing tracks, the train is moving from Bypass 2 to Main 1, ready to cross over Federal Blvd.

There is quite a bit happening in this picture! First, the train passing under the signal bridge to the right is UP's MGJNY. Coming off the Moffat, the train is entering in Track 5 here at North Yard for classification. Next to it, the train on the left under the signal bridge is BNSF's HPVODEN, coming from Provo, UT. This train had been following the MGJNY just a few blocks back since Cliff and, out of necessity, is now passing it here in Denver. Meanwhile, a BNSF yard job is working on building a double stack train to the left, with the classic EMDs kicking up exhaust like they should be Alcos! The track crossing perpendicular to many of the other through the scene is the Belt Industrial Lead which leads to UP's Greeley Sub.

The westbound Zephyr wraps around the curve between Utah Jct and Pecos Street, passing by the Cargill grain elevator and old Denver & Salt Lake water tower. Off in the distance is the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City.

A pair of UP SD70Ms pass underneath the still-standing signal bridge with classic searchlight signals on it at Utah Jct. The standard Rocky Mountaineer power is currently be worked on, so UP has leased the SD70Ms as substitute power. To UP's credit, they found some very clean and nice looking SD70Ms.

After a rare move that saw the Rocky Mountaineer back down the Belt Line and in to North Yard, the train is now moving forward again, pulling out of North Yard and crossing over the North Yard siding to Main 3 for the trip west over the Moffat to Moab.

As clouds build to the west, threatening rain, UP's MGJNY-10 sits at a red signal at Utah Jct, patiently awaiting its turn to bring the train in to North Yard. The class signal bridge at Utah Jct still stands in 2023!

Although there is no train present, the interlocking at Utah Jct is a fascinating one. In addition to being the north end of North Yard, the main track for UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub and the main track for BNSF's Front Range Sub both cross UP's Belt Industrial Lead which leads to UP's Greeley Sub. A crazy number of tracks, switches, and signals are at this control point. Here, a red signal protects the diamond where BNSF's Front Range Sub and UP's Belt Industrial Lead cross. The signals are controlled by UP's dispatcher in Omaha, NE.

With its entrance into North Yard currently block by a yard job, the crew on this eastbound MGJNY have no choice but to sit patiently and wait on the main just west of Utah Jct. A commuter train, heading to Union Station, passes by on RTD's combined B and G commuter rail line.

A GP40-2 and an SD40-2 lead a yard job back under the classic signal bridge at Utah Jct, shoving a string of covered hoppers in to North Yard. UP 1502 was built in in May 1971 as a GP40 for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O 3776). It was later sold to Espee, becoming SP 7124, before eventually being rebuilt to Dash-2 specs and falling to UP ownership. Looking good for being 52 years old!

UP's eastbound MGJNY (Manifest, Grand Jct to North Yard) is stopped on the main just west of the signal bridge at Utah Jct. Meanwhile, a yard job has pulled out of North Yard, on the North Yard Siding. The yard job is currently blocking the entrance into North Yard, hence to necessity for the manifest to hold out on the main.
