It is not too often you get the chance to shoot the eastbound Zephyr in morning sunlight in the Denver area! Due to extreme weather in California this winter, I have had that chance twice in the past two weeks! The Zephyr that should have arrived Denver the night before is 14 hours late here as it charges east on Main 1. It will meet #5 at Pecos...DS-86 has already lined #5 west on Main 2 here.

10 years ago, this shot looked quite different! There were only two tracks (one of which was the Arvada siding) and the commuter rail bridge was nowhere near even being started yet. Now finished, the commuter rail line still awaits traffic as testing continues. Meanwhile, a very tardy #6 heads east on Main 1.

For the second time in as many weeks, the eastbound Zephyr is about 14 hours late coming into Denver, making for a morning arrival. Mother Nature has had her way with the Zephyr (and all trains) over Donner Pass in California. The snow has been relentless and UP is doing all they can to keep the line open. Here, the Zephyr passes underneath the (not-yet-open) RTD Gold Line commuter tracks just west of Sheridan.

Back when the old Ski Train was running, the train would be wyed (turned around) at Tabernash. Eight years later, however, finds the wye at Tabernash out of service. Amtrak's solution is to place AMTK 406 on the east end of the train. This former F40PH is now a NPCU, or Non-Powered Cab Unit. It still has a control stand in the cab, but no prime mover. Instead, when the engineer works the controls, the commands are sent to the P42DCs on the west end of the train. So the train will actually be pushed up the grade from Fraser to Winter Park, but the engineer will still be on the east end of the train.

In order to ensure the Winter Park Express makes it up to Winter Park and back, Amtrak is using a pair of P42DCs in front of the eight Superliners. Just moments after the sun peeked over the horizon, the Ski Train approaches the Sheridan Blvd underpass.

It is 8°F outside and there is plenty of snow on the ground. Excellent conditions for the first run of the new Ski Train! The old Ski Train was operated by Ansco (Phil Anschutz's company). The new Ski Train, known as the Winter Park Express, is operated by Amtrak directly. Here, the first run of the Ski Train heads west on Main 2 past the RTD Sheridan Station.

The first run of the Winter Park Express (the new Ski Train) charges quickly west on Main 2 just west of Tennyson Street. Snow dust is flying off the eight Superliners on the trip west.

Each time a new prototype unit is released, the manufacturer has a new demonstrator paint scheme to accompany it. Personally, I think the demo scheme on the SD70ACe-T4 is one of the better ones EMD has come up with. Granted, some people have referred to it as the Seattle Seahawks scheme...but still, this Denver Broncos fan can overlook that!

When out testing new prototypes, EMD has a "test car" that they typically splice in between new units. Think of it as a rolling command center for EMD. It allows them to closely monitor the performance of the new units. Here, EMDX 820 is cut in between two new SD70ACe-T4 prototypes.

Whenever EMD or GE roll out a new unit, the prototypes almost always wind up on the Moffat Tunnel Sub. Why? It is the highest active standard gauge mainline in the United States, and it is loaded with tunnels. This allows for both high altitude testing and tunnel performance testing. EMD's Tier-4 compliant SD70ACe-T4 is no exception. Here, a special train escorts two such prototypes and an EMD test car west on the Moffat.

A lot has changed in this view in the last ten years. The Sheridan Blvd overpass, which the train is running beneath, was completely rebuilt. That was done to provide enough room for commuter rail to fit underneath the bridge, which is on the opposite side of this coal empty. There are now two main tracks here for UP, the second completed just a few years ago. One thing that isn't new is the stub track in the foreground! It connects in with BNSF's Golden Sub and hasn't been used in a few years.

One of few-remaining coal trains on the Moffat heads west on Main 1 alongside the new commuter rail station near Sheridan Blvd. The train is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. Upon returning east, the coal will be delivered to the Xcel Energy Cherokee power plant in northeast Denver. The plant is in the process of converting to natural gas and, by the end of 2016, this coal train will likely be eliminated. The closest track in the foreground is BNSF's Golden Sub. The track next to it is UP's Arvada Siding.

Ten years ago, there were only two tracks along here. The Moffat Tunnel Main (UP's track), furthest from camera and the Golden Sub (BNSF's line to Golden) nearest the camera. UP's Main 2 (which Amtrak is on) and the Arvada Siding are relatively new. UP supplies the coal for the Coors Brewery. UP leaves loaded hoppers on the Arvada Siding and BNSF's "Beer Run" picks it up. Also of note, this is the first shot I've taken from the recently rebuilt Sheridan Blvd overpass.

Running nearly three hours late, the westbound Zephyr passes by a lot of work on the new commuter rail being constructed north and west of Denver. The Zephyr is running on Main 2, which is typical of most trains between Arvada and C&S Junction. The commuter rail is being constructed parallel to the tracks, and there is a Form B on Main 1 during the day to protect construction workers.

Winters in general (and blizzards specifically) are the perfect time to crank out a few black and white shots! This HPVODEN (or QPVDVJ in the UP computer) is nearing the end of its journey.
