This is the first MNYRO to use the new intermediate at Kipling Street. The evening before, the old intermediate were deactivated and (as can be seen in this shot) laid along the right of way.

Out with the old, in with the new. Here is the new! The old intermediates at Kipling, which were multiple decades old, came down the evening before. This new intermediate will hopefully guide trains on the Moffat for decades to come.

Less than 24 hours ago, the signal was still online and providing information to westbound trains. The heads on the signal will be recycled elsewhere on the system. You can see the old concrete stand (painted black) on the left side of the shot.

At Kipling Street, the old DRGW-ear westbound intermediate lies inactive along the side of the rails.

The old eastbound intermediate at Kipling Street lays decapitated next to the right of way. Shouldn't there be crime scene tape up? :)

After sitting inactive for ten months, UP finally activated the new intermediate at Kipling on the evening of Wednesday, March 28th. The old intermediate were shut down and laid on their sides along the right of way.

Running precisely on schedule, the westbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at 72nd Avenue in Arvada on its journey west. There had been a rumor the night before that one of Amtrak's Heritage units would be leading the Zephyr. Unfortunately, that rumor didn't pan out.

The new intermediate signals at Kipling Street that have yet to be activated. It's great to see UP investing in the Moffat, but sad to know this investment means the end of the classic signals that have stood here at Kipling street for decades!

Had to get a "roster shot" of these classic signals which have stood here at Kipling street for decades. They are now in their final few months (possibly even weeks) of service along the Moffat. They will be replaced with the new intermediate signals, seen in this shot.

As the tail end DPU's move away in this shot, note the "yellow/red" board on the right side of the track in the distance. This board indicates that the train is two miles away from a red board (looks the same except it is entirely red). A train is not allowed to pass a red board without permission from the track foreman in charge, regardless of what indication signals might be giving a train. The crew knows what foreman to contact thanks to "Form B" paperwork that the conductor has with him. On this day, the "Form B" is between Arvada (CP DS007) and C&S Junction (CP DS005) as crews work to complete construction of the new Main 2 track. The red boards protect the maintenance crews from trains. Once the train contacts the foreman, the foreman will make sure his men are clear of the tracks and then give the train permission to proceed past the red board and through the Form B limits.

These are a two of the few-remaining signals that still remain on the Moffat from the days of Rio Grande. And, as you can see, their days are numbered! A new intermediate signal has been installed but it has not yet been activated. It won't be activated until UP has completed work on the new Main 2 track between Arvada (CP DS007) and C&S Junction (CP DS005).

These signals are two of the last holdouts of classic Rio Grande signals on the Moffat. The only other location between Denver and the Moffat where you can find these target signals is at Utah Junction and east Leyden. Unfortunately, these are going to be coming down very soon. A few dozen feet west of this shot (behind me), a new signal mast has been erected.
