DS-378 set up a fantastic meet at Leyden between this westbound oil empty and the eastbound Zephyr. The Zephyr held the main while the oil train ran through the siding. It ended up being a rolling meet, meaning neither train had to come to a stop. With some crazy evening storm lighting, the oil train leaves Leyden westbound.

Ironically enough, after getting a shot of the Zephyr this morning, I had planned to head back home as I didn't expect there to be anything else running on the Moffat. Much to my surprise, a westbound highballed Leyden, and I set up for a shot of this westbound BNSF oil empty with the standard six units on the head end.

One last shot of a westbound oil train pulling out of the siding at Leyden on a day that I referred to as "Potpourri Sunday", as it offered a little bit of everything over the course of the day.

After meeting the eastbound Canyon Spirit here at Leyden, it is this unit oil trains turn to move. The engineer is throttling up and pulling west out of the siding. The train would only make it as far as Rocky before having to take the siding again, this time for the eastbound Zephyr.

A majority of the last two years, Union Pacific has used the siding at Leyden for long term car storage. At the moment, however, the siding is empty and DS-378 is using the siding for a meet with the westbound Zephyr.

A trio of DPUs bring up the tail end of a (roughly) 6,000 foot long oil train. There are piles of ties scattered along the right-of-way that will soon be installed as part of the massive maintenance project UP is currently running on the Moffat. This is likely to be the last train until the eastbound Zephyr this afternoon, giving work crews the time they need on the main.

After meeting a two-hour late Zephyr at Rocky, the West Local is at the west end of Leyden and is headed back to Denver with four gondolas. The local spotted two gondolas with tie plates and some MOW equipment in the house track at Rocky, and is now returning to North Yard. The lead unit is UP 1357. This particular GP40-2 is very familiar with the Moffat. It started life as DRGW 3102, delivered to the Grande in April 1972.

The westbound Zephyr is running six hours late this morning as it heads west out of Leyden on a sunny afternoon. The first Superliner behind the baggage car is the crew car (the transition sleeper). Looks like a crew member is catching a bit of fresh air.

UP's MNYGJ departs North Yard for Grand Junction on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Typically, the crew is called in the late afternoon and it is quite common for the train to depart well after sunset. The best chance to get shots of the train in light are on the longest days of the year in summer. Such is the case on this day, as UP 6220 heads west out of Leyden. Of note, UP 6220 is no stranger to the Moffat, originally delivered as SP 113 in April 1995.

This westbound OCS (Officer Car Special) is headed slowly west, operating under some slow orders through Leyden. The train is about to knock down a clear (green) signal at the west end.

After meeting two eastbound trains at Arvada, it was finally this rail trains turn to head west. The train only has a handful of strips of welded rail, which are to be dropped off in various locations between Plain and Cliff. As the summer draws closer, maintenance projects are beginning to pick up!
