Typically, the crew is called in the late afternoon and it is quite common for the train to depart well after sunset. The best chance to get shots of the train in light are on the longest days of the year in summer. Such is the case on this day, as UP 6220 heads west out of Leyden. As a result, Class 1 railroads have largely started rebuilding older locomotives as rebuilds are not subject to the same standards. It is cheaper than buying Tier-4 compliant locomotives, which, even after their initial sticker price, are more expensive (and more complicated) to maintain. You can see the photo that I am referring to, taken at the west switch of Leyden. Getting the westbound Zephyr at this same spot today felt like a nice way to book end the year. It was a record-setting year for ColoradoRailfan. I added 1,627 photos to my site, obliterating the previous record of 1,060 that I set in 2023. The Zephyr just overtook a westbound oil train, and you can see the conductor from the oil train headed back to the cab of the lead unit after giving the Zephyr a roll by.
