AMTK 71 leads another P42DC and a standard consist for the Zephyr out of the west end of Leyden. The train is crossing over Indiana Street, the busiest north-south road in Western Arvada.

The westbound Zephyr charges west on the main at Leyden. It's nice to see that the siding at Leyden is once again empty and available for meets after a string of empty well cars were stored there for close to five months! Well cars were tied down there early on the morning of January 3, 2024. Overnight on May 27, 2024, they were picked up and taken back to Denver.

A pair of ES44ACs bring up the tail end of an eastbound coal empty through the west end of Leyden. The bottom light on the signal has shown nothing but a red indication for over four months now due to the empty well cars, tied down for long term storage.

Someone once said the only thing that stays the same is change. For the past few months, UP has periodically been running this coal empty eastbound on the Moffat. Once arriving in Denver, the train will head north on the Greeley Sub and eventually the Yoder Sub, making its way to the Power River Basin where it will load. The loaded train will head west through Wyoming on the Overland Route. Note the red flag that UP has put up on the siding at Leyden, protecting the empty well cars that have been stored for over four months now.

UP 8047 east crosses over Indiana Street at the west end of Leyden, taking a long line of empty coal hoppers toward Denver. There, it will turn north and head up the Greeley Sub.

After arriving 12 1/2 hours late in Chicago, it took Amtrak a little time to get the train ready for the trip west. It departed Chicago nearly five hours late the previous day, and departed Denver just over five hours late today. Here, clouds are keeping the train in shadows as it leaves west out of Leyden.

An eastbound UP manifest has a single ES44AC as a trailing DPU as the train rolls down the main at Leyden. The DPU is crossing over Indiana Street, a road that the City of Arvada would like to widen to four lanes, but will require the replacement of this bridge as it is only wide enough for the current two lanes.

A massive string of empty well cars, measuring around 6,400 feet, was taken out to Leyden (from Denver) by UP early in the pre-dawn hours of January 3. The power cut off and returned light to Denver. It would appear that UP is planning to keep them in long term storage here at Leyden!

On a temperate morning on the first day of 2024, the westbound Zephyr is on time as it knocks down a clear (green) signal at the west end of Leyden. Folks who have been on the train since yesterday enjoyed spending New Year's on Amtrak.

UP 5978 crosses over Indiana Street on the approach to the west end of Leyden. The bridge over Indiana still displays it's "Rio Grande" lettering. This bridge's days are certainly numbered as the City of Arvada would like to widen Indiana to four lanes. Doing this will (obviously) necessitate a new bridge. With that said, funding is not available for the project, so for now, the bridge is not in imminent danger.

Long shadows are cast on the ground on the far side of the fill as this eastbound Provo-Denver heads down the main at Leyden. Most of the homes in this shot are part of "Five Parks", now the fourth-newest major residential development on the west side of Arvada.

The westbound Zephyr leaves Leyden behind and crosses over the bridge that takes the tracks over Indiana Street in west Arvada. Many citizens in west Arvada want Indiana Street to be widened to four lanes to accommodate traffic growth. This classic bridge is the signal largest obstacle to the widening as that cost would, naturally, be quite high.

The westbound Zephyr lost about two hours at various points across the plains between Chicago and Denver. With a little bit of time made up, the Zephyr is just over 90 minutes late as it blasts west on the main at Leyden on a beautiful November morning.

After knocking down a clear (green) signal at the west end of Leyden, this eastbound UP manifest is continuing on the final 10 or so miles on its journey in to North Yard. The train crosses Indiana Street, currently two lanes. There are plans to expand this stretch of Indiana Street to four lanes, but the bridge the track run on would have to be rebuilt to accommodate the additional lanes. Currently, there is no funding for the project.
