Yesterday morning, thanks to the weather, the Winter Park Express left Leyden in a nice "blue hour" light. This morning, all the clouds have cleared and the Winter Park Express as the Winter Park Express knocks down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden in glorious "golden hour" light.

I really enjoy the westbound morning run of the Winter Park Express toward the start of the season. When the train reaches Leyden, such as in this shot, the sun has just barely crested the horizon to the east, just about 20 minutes after sunrise. The glinting sun off the side of the P42s and seven Superliners just cannot be beat!

Four seconds before 8am, and the Winter Park Express is climbing the 2% grade from the base of Coal Creek Canyon up toward Tunnel 1. So far this season, the morning Ski Train has been running on time, and usually arriving Winter Park a few minutes early. The eastbound train has been late more often, but I'm sure skiers would prefer to have the evening train late over the morning train.

Just west of Tunnel 1, AMTK 75 and AMTK 146 lead the Winter Park Express westbound. This season, with the train running five days a week, AMTK 75 will lead westbound on Friday and Sunday for one week, then least westbound on Thursday, Saturday, Monday the next. So both units will be on the point (on varying days) eastbound and westbound.

DS-378 has set up a nice meet here at Rocky between the westbound California Zephyr and an eastbound BNSF Provo-Denver. The conductor on the Provo-Denver is just climbing down off the head end in order to give a roll by to the Zephyr. There isn't a cloud in the sky, which is resulting in slightly colder temperatures, right around 20°F (-7°C) at the moment.

A trio of SD70ACes leads this eastbound Provo-Denver as it approaches the west end of Leyden. While much of the mid-west is buried under multiple inches of snow, the Denver area has seen hardly any snowfall so far this winter season.

A pair of GEs, a C44-9W and an ES440AC, bring up the tail end of this eastbound Provo-Denver manifest as it crosses Indiana Street at the west end of Leyden. BNSF manifests on the Moffat frequently consist of more tank cars than anything else, and today is no exception.
