This one has a straight shot down to C&S Junction. There, it will hold for the westbound Zephyr, which is ready to depart Union Station right on time at 8:05am. At it appears that the sale to GECX was extremely recent. I found a picture of BNSF 4823 (still as BNSF) in a shot from August 2020 in Iowa. Granted, that shot had it in a deadline, for perhaps it was sold directly from there in the last few months to GECX. Note the new construction to the left of the train, including a new "Kum & Go" gas station that just opened a week ago. The houses to the left of the train make up the neighborhoods of Five Parks and Whisper Creek. Construction on Five Parks took place around 2000, and Whisper Creek around 2005. In the distance is man-made Stanley Lake. Because the lake is downwind from the former Rocky Flats - a plant that used to build triggers for nuclear bombs - locals often joke that Stanley Lake is home to three-headed fish and glowing plants. There is a desire to widen the road to four lanes here, but that will not happen unless and until the bridge can be replaced to accommodate four lanes. One of the units on the train failed as it was coming through Arvada. Not wanting to block any grade crossing, the train pulled between switches on the main at Leyden and dropped off the conductor. It then pulled west of Leyden and is now backing down on the siding. The train will be cut in half and the front half will be taken west to dump ballast. New houses are being built on the north side of the tracks. Indeed, the classic Rio Grande bridge over Indiana Street may be living on borrowed time. There is a push to widen Indiana Street from two lanes to four lanes through here. That would necessitate a slight grade realignment for a new, wider bridge. The engineer is putting the proverbial pedal to the metal as the train starts accelerating. As far as trains go, the Zephyr can actually start and reach track speed quite fast because it is so light relative to other trains. The Zephyr sat on the main at the west end of Leyden for about ten minutes while waiting for BNSF's Provo-Denver to show up. A Rocky meet would have been a bit more expeditious for the Zephyr. A couple inches of snow fell overnight, making the middle of April look a bit more like the middle of January! Evidence that may be the case showed up on the last day of November when a loaded UP oil train came east off the Moffat. The train started in Helper and took 36 hours to make it to Denver! Note the new construction occurring on the north side of the tracks. Several multi-family homes and a few businesses (including a gas station) are being built here. The City of Arvada attempted to get a Federal Grant to rebuild this bridge in order to widen Indiana Street to four lanes through there. However, the grant was denied, so Indiana remains two lanes. Meanwhile, additional homes and a new strip mall are being built int he background, which will of course add more traffic to Indiana! The eastbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear signal at the west end of Leyden, crossing over Indiana Street.
