AMTK 10 is looking at a signal that recently cleared (turned green). The engineer is putting the proverbial pedal to the metal as the train starts accelerating. As far as trains go, the Zephyr can actually start and reach track speed quite fast because it is so light relative to other trains.

With as few trains running on the Moffat these days as there are, the dispatcher is probably a bit out of practice in timing perfect meets! The Zephyr sat on the main at the west end of Leyden for about ten minutes while waiting for BNSF's Provo-Denver to show up. A Rocky meet would have been a bit more expeditious for the Zephyr.

A fairly short BNSF Provo-Denver approaches a Diverging Approach (red over yellow) signal at the west end of Leyden while it passes over Indiana Street in West Arvada. The train already has a signal out the other end of the siding to continue on toward Denver.

As often happens this time of year, the Front Range of Colorado has been hit by a winter storm. A couple inches of snow fell overnight, making the middle of April look a bit more like the middle of January! The eastbound BNSF Provo-to-Denver pays no mind to the snow though as it rolls east at Leyden.

A short BNSF Provo-to-Denver rolls slowly east on a clear signal at West Leyden. The train this morning is quite short, with a block of coal hoppers, a block of tank cars, and a second block of four more coal hoppers.

After a total drop off of oil trains, there have been rumblings that they may start to pick up again. Evidence that may be the case showed up on the last day of November when a loaded UP oil train came east off the Moffat. The train started in Helper and took 36 hours to make it to Denver! Note the new construction occurring on the north side of the tracks. Several multi-family homes and a few businesses (including a gas station) are being built here.

BNSF's Denver-Provo departs the siding at Leyden on a clear signal, crossing Indiana Street. The City of Arvada attempted to get a Federal Grant to rebuild this bridge in order to widen Indiana Street to four lanes through there. However, the grant was denied, so Indiana remains two lanes. Meanwhile, additional homes and a new strip mall are being built int he background, which will of course add more traffic to Indiana!

Clouds are building and a storm is starting to form on the evening of the 4th of July. The eastbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear signal at the west end of Leyden, crossing over Indiana Street. The skyline of downtown Denver is visible above the train, now about 13 miles away to the east.

It has been 18 months since I shot a westbound UP manifest on the Moffat! After getting rid of the MNYRO and MRONY in December 2018, UP started running the MNYGJ and MGJNY, each three times a week. Typically, the MNYGJ departs after dark on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights. However, there were no rested crews in Denver last night! The first crew was rested at 12:15pm today, and the train was then called. Here, the manifest crosses Indiana Street coming out of the west end of Leyden.

A pair of GEs, facing the "wrong way", bring up the tail end of a loaded oil train east at the west switch of Leyden. The train met Amtrak at Eisele (Clay) and now has clear signals the rest of the way in to the yard.

At the west switch of Leyden, a westbound coal empty with six units on the point has a clear signal. Second out on the empty is a visitor from the north...a Canadian National C44-9W joins the cast. Interesting that a DC unit is on the lineup for a coal train.
