A view looking north (geographically west) along the new north end of the siding of Broomfield. The track has been laid, although ballast has not yet be placed beneath it.

On Monday, August 10th, the track gangs showed up and got the ties and track down for the new north end of Broomfield. The track gang works here to check a few ties before heading to lunch. Ballast will come next along with tamping and regulating. Not long after, it should be ready for trains!

While there are not a whole lot of them left, you can still find (standard cab) B40-8s running around on BNSFs system. This particular unit was delivered in June 1988 and is working with fellow (wide cab) B40-8 on the Longmont Switch, a local originating out of Longmont.

This exact scene (with two tracks) will not be possible too much longer! With the construction of a new underpass to connect 120th Avenue with CO-128, BNSF is moving the siding of Broomfield north of this location. Once that is complete, only the mainline will remain through this scene. This pair of B40-8s (551 being a B40-8W, of course) is slowly rolling south toward the south switch to wait for two northbounds.

The loaded Valmont coal train sits (tied down) in the siding at Broomfield. The train has cut the grade crossing at Nickel Street, a process that soon will not be necessary once the siding of Broomfield shifts to the north side of Nickel Street. The Valmont train is loaded at Energy Mine (on the Craig Branch). UP brings the train to Denver and then turns it over to BNSF. Often times, the train will run to Valmont with the UP power still on the train! In fact, this is the exact same train that I shot a few days earlier with an unpatched Espee leader. Alas, the Espee unit was removed in Denver.

On my lunch break, I ran up to Broomfield to see what progress was being made on the siding extension to the north. As you can see here, a gang is working at the (new) north end of the siding. Rumor has it a track gang is showing up to get to work on laying track. That makes sense as I saw two track tempers being unloaded from a flat bed truck as I was leaving to head back to the office.

Looking south along the mainline toward the south end of Broomfield, we can see the start of the construction that will take 120th Avenue underneath BNSF's Front Range Sub. Within a year or two, this shot will show the tracks going over a bridge and the road running below.

Building a road! The city of Broomfield is in the process of connecting 120th Avenue and CO-128. Doing so means constructing an underpass beneath BNSF's Front Range Sub. In this shot, you can see that the beginning of the underpass has been dug out leading up to the tracks.

Anybody feeling lucky? When you catch a Warbonnet looking as good as this one that just happens to have 777 as the number, seems like a good day to play the lottery!

July 8th was an extraordinarily cool and rainy day in the Denver area. So much rain was falling, in fact, that water was quickly building up in ditches and depressions. Such is the case here as a southbound (empty) windmill blade train proceeds on the siding at Broomfield. In the not too distant future, this shot will no longer be possible. BNSF is in the process of shifting the siding at Broomfield to the north, meaning this portion of the siding will soon be torn up.

That smoke coming off the engines doesn't look too good! Not to worry...it actually isn't smoke at all. As the train was sitting (and idling) in the siding, some of the falling rain accumulated on the radiator. When the engines throttled up (and heated up), the water turned to steam! With a new track warrant taking them all the way to Denver, this southbound has crossing Nickel Street.

I believe this train is an (empty) windmill blade train. I'm not entirely sure why it is headed south (since it is empty) as there is a windmill manufacturing plant in Windsor, CO. Regardless, the Norfolk Southern leader is a nice touch! If you look on the main (to the left of the train), you can see the future south siding switch for the siding of Broomfield.

A pair of SD70s (an ACe and a MAC) push on the tail end of a northbound coal empty at Broomfield. The train is crossing over Nickel Street and passing underneath US-287. BNSF frequently sends coal empties, destined for the Powder River Basin, to reduce traffic on the Brush and Angora Subs.

A single SD70ACe leads this northbound coal empty north on the main at Broomfield. With the switches at both ends of Broomfield aligned for the main and a track warrant to MP 32, this empty is moving along at track speed. It look odd to see a single unit on the point of the train.

Six GEs (of varying model) lead BNSF's Cheyenne to Denver manifest. The train is stopped about 2,500 feet north of the north switch of Broomfield. The train is waiting for a lone GP39-3 to get in the clear. Once it is in the clear, the dispatcher will give the Cheyenne-Denver a track warrant with a "Box 4", which will allow it to perform some work. Specifically, two of the C44-9Ws on the train (the 4th and 5th units) are to be set out at Broomfield to work on a maintenance train. Once complete, the train will receive a new warrant and continue the rest of the way in to Denver.
