Dang! Not only was I lucky enough to catch a UP SD70ACe leading a coal empty earlier in the day, but I was lucky enough to catch another SD70ACe on the point of a unit sand train. And this was was BNSF, which is even more of a rarity!

Not only is this train set apparently running in circles between Florida and Colorado, but the CSX power is even making the trip more than once! I caught this exact same CSX unit on the point of this same train set about two weeks earlier, on January 12th. On this partly cloudy morning, the train has clear signals to Bypass 2 in Denver.

It's been about four months now, and coal trains with CSX power are still rolling on the Moffat from time-to-time. After loading at the West Elk Mine, this loaded is headed for Denver to cut out its mid-train swings and then continue out on to the plains toward its final destination of Florida.

A little black and white action in the midst of a blowing January blizzard. A single SD70ACe is bringing up the tail end of this eastbound coal train.

Always love catching EMD power on the Moffat. It may only be a single unit, but this SD70ACe looks good in the snow on the tail end of this eastbound coal load.

Most eastbound coal trains on the Moffat have three mid-train swing helpers. I have seen a few instances of four mid-train swings...but I think this may be the first time I've caught five mid-train swing helpers! The quintet will be set out in Denver, and the train will head for the plains with a standard 2x(0)x1 consist.

This coal load is passing by the Chem Spur switch as it slowly rolls east toward Leyden. The train will continue down to Bypass 2, where the mid-train swing helpers will be cut out and the train will continue out on to the Limon Sub.

A single SD70ACe bring up the tail end of a westbound coal empty as the train slowly disappears in to the morning blizzard. You can barely even see the intermediate signal at MP 14.5, only a quarter of mile away.

What was once an empty field (five years ago) to the south of tracks west of Leyden is now the Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock! A pair of DPUs work on a westbound coal empty as the train passes by a row of houses on the north edge of the development.

Despite several inches of snow falling the day before, much of the snow has melted in the direct sunlight even though temperatures have not yet even warmed up to 32°F. A westbound coal empty with a quintet of power on the point makes its way out of Leyden under a clear January sky.

Five units lead this westbound coal empty, which is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch. The train has five units on the point and a pair of DPUs on the tail end. That means this train will most likely run 2x3x2 or possibly 3x3x1 on its journey back east.

Today's westbound Zephyr has the Phase 3 Heritage Unit, AMTK 145, on the train. Alas, it was second out in the consist. The train is paralleling CO-72 just west of Leyden, approximately 14 1/2 miles west of Denver Union Station.

A lot of fog formed in the Denver area overnight and, with some morning clouds blocking the direct sunlight, a lot of the fog is still lingering near the ground as we look toward downtown. Meanwhile, the westbound Zephyr is run just a hair late as it heads west of Leyden with seven Superliners in tow.
