March is traditionally the snowiest month in Colorado, although March 2016 hasn't really reflect that fact. At least, up until the 18th when a good winter storm came in. The snow actually started falling the night before and continued overnight. BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest glides east through the white stuff between Leyden and Rocky. The rails are completely covered, which is logical as the last train to pass over the rails was the eastbound Zephyr 15 hours earlier!

Okay, spotting the first train in this image is pretty easy. But, can you spot the second train in the image? If you look just above the last unit on the manifest, you can see a westbound coal load at Eisele (formerly Clay). The two trains met at Rocky. The eastbound is now approach west Leyden and the westbound is headed for the Tunnel District and points west.

A single C44/60AC brings up the tail end of the MNYRO at the first intermediate west of Leyden. This unit was once an AC6000CW with a 16-cylinder HDL prime mover with 6000 horsepower. However, as the high horsepower craze died down at the start of the 21st Century, UP replaced the prime movers with 12-cylinder FDL prime movers, giving them 4400 horsepower.

UP has decided to reduce the number of manifests they run over the Moffat by increasing the lengths of the manifests and only running them every other day. The result so far has been long trains with a lot of power! This MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard, CO to Roper, UT) has nine units on the point (of which four were currently online) and one DPU on the tail end. In between were 110 cars that brought the train to roughly 7,000 feet in length!

The Phase III paint scheme is and always has, by far, been my favorite of Amtrak's paint schemes. Two units, a P40DC and a P42DC, were painted in a re-imagined version of the Phase III for the 40th Anniversary of Amtrak. As luck would have it, both units were leading the westbound Zephyr on this Wednesday morning. Add in Amtrak's new baggage cars, also painted in a Phase III scheme, and things look pretty good here!

Now this or more along the lines of what Amtrak should look like (in my humble opinion). The westbound California Zephyr has a pair of Amtrak Heritage Units (both in the Phase III scheme) leading as the train passes by new home construction in the Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock.

An eastbound rolls past Chem Spur, east of Barbara's Gulch. The train will stop at Leyden long enough to assist a UP train to tie their train down. The crew on the UP train was not informed that they should tie the train down and, by the time they learned this, they had already died. Once a crew has died, they are not allowed to do anything other than sit on the train and ensure it doesn't roll. This includes tying it down. The BNSF crew lent a hand though and the UP crew was able to leave on a van.

If you are reading this and are new to trains, the term die refers to a crew that has worked for 12 consecutive hours. Once they have worked 12 hours, they are "dead" and cannot do anything else.

BNSF was shuttling a lot of power from Provo back to Denver on this day. At least, I assume that was the case as only the first three of the eight units were actually online. Interesting how six BNSF units were sandwiched between a CitiRail leaser and a CSX unit! Behind the train (right side of the frame), you will notice a set of tracks. This is the Chem Spur which hasn't been used in over two years since Mesa Oil moved to a new location.

Both UP and BNSF manifests on the Moffat tend to be dominated by tank cars these days. This BNSF Provo-Denver was no exception. Other than a few assorted cars near the point, most of the remainder of the train is tanks.

This is probably in the top 10 most "classic" shots on the east side of the divide along the Moffat, with the tall lattice structure in the background (whose purpose seems to be a bit of mystery to everyone). Hard to believe this view has been dominated by Union Pacific for nearly 20 years now.

The MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) has an all-EMD consist on this Thursday afternoon. This is something that has been happening more and more and has been nice to see (and hear) on the Moffat.

Even though GE currently dominates in the modern locomotive market, EMD reigns in classic power. That is something that makes this EMD fan quite happy. Three GP40-2s (ex-DRGW, ex-DRGW, and ex-SSW from left-to-right) head back light toward Denver.

The southern sun offers up a nice silhouette of three GP40-2s just west of Leyden. The trio is the power for the West Local and is returning to Denver from East Portal where they dropped off a single tank car.

While I have no insider knowledge, it is simply my belief that this right here may be the best shot for the Moffat's long-term survival. Apparently there is more oil (in the form of shale) in Western Colorado and East Utah than nearly anywhere else in the world. At the time of this photo, oil prices were quite low, so demand for that particularly oil was rather low. However, when pricing goes back up, particularly in the long term, that oil might become quite attractive. And the Moffat will be an excellent line for hauling it.

Up close and in your face! I decided to post multiple shots of the KCS "Belles" leading a westbound oil train on Valentine's Day Eve. We don't get these colorful creatures in Colorado all too often, so I wanted to advantage while I could.
