Now this or more along the lines of what Amtrak should look like (in my humble opinion). The westbound California Zephyr has a pair of Amtrak Heritage Units (both in the Phase III scheme) leading as the train passes by new home construction in the Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock.

The Phase III paint scheme is and always has, by far, been my favorite of Amtrak's paint schemes. Two units, a P40DC and a P42DC, were painted in a re-imagined version of the Phase III for the 40th Anniversary of Amtrak. As luck would have it, both units were leading the westbound Zephyr on this Wednesday morning. Add in Amtrak's new baggage cars, also painted in a Phase III scheme, and things look pretty good here!

The westbound Zephyr, running just a few minutes late, heads west on the main at Eisele (formerly Clay). The train consists of seven Superliners, which is fairly typical for winter months when demand is a little lower. You may also note that both units on the point are wearing the Phase III heritage scheme!

A P40DC and a P42DC, both wearing the Phase III heritage scheme, cross over CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. Personally, I'd love to see Amtrak's entire fleet repainted in this Phase III scheme. It has always been my favorite and makes for a mighty sharp shot on a crisp February morning.
