As the grade increases, the engineer of the West Local throttles up a bit and the second unit lets a little exhaust go. The wind is blowing pretty good, taking some low-lying quickly across Welton Reservoir. There is no former Rio Grande power on the West Local on this day. All this power was once scarlet and gray! Including the middle GP40-2 which was once Cotton Belt as SSW 7963.

UP 1479, a recent transfer to the Denver area, leads the West Local on the main west of Leyden. UP 1479 started out as SP 7109, a GP40. It went through Espee's rebuild program in March of 1991 and was upgraded to Dash-2 specs and is now a GP40M-2. It was patched to its current number on September 28, 2001.

It is a very pleasant afternoon on this last day of winter for 2014. There have been a few work windows on the Moffat lately, so not a lot of trains are running during the day. Consequently, the West Local will have a straight shot to North Yard.

A trio of GP40-2s leads seven covered hoppers, loaded with aggregate, on the journey east toward Denver. After arriving in North Yard, the covered hoppers will be sorted in the yard and placed on the appropriate train (or trains) and sent to their destinations.

In this long lens shot, the West Local is looking very small as it descends down the grade toward the intermediate signal at MP 14.6. The local has clear signals...a straight shot in to Denver.

Steel. Gotta love how well it endures! This rail located west of Leyden is 35 years old! It was rolled at Colorado Fuel and Iron (in Pueblo, CO) in 1979. The rail is seen here doing what it was designed to do and what it has done thousands of times...supporting the weight of a wheel (and car) rolling over it.

I've said it a lot lately, but I like the fact that newer power is showing up more and more on Colorado coal trains on the Moffat. Not only SD70ACes, but also ES44ACs. Examples of both are seen here on this North Fork bound coal empty.

After meeting an eastbound coal load at Leyden, this westbound empty got a clear signal to head west. That clear signal didn't last long though...the train will head in to the siding at Rocky in order to meet the eastbound California Zephyr. The three units (which includes an SD70ACe) are the only three units on the train for the trip to Grand Junction.

A quartet of GEs lead a westbound coal empty, headed for the North Fork Branch in western Colorado, west at dawn along CO-72 near Chemical (MP 14.5). While it is a simply beautiful morning, a little bit of haze is clinging to the Denver skyline.

Keep that train moving! A pair of DPUs bring up the tail end of this coal train as they zip past the photographer on their journey west. To get the "blur" effect, I brought my ISO down to 100 and pumped my aperture up to F22 to get a 1/25 second shot.

At the time of this photo, there were only eleven unpatched Espee AC4400CWs left on UP's roster. Then again, considering it has been over 17 years since the UP/SP merger, it is pretty amazing that there are any left. Whenever I am lucky enough to see one, I always wonder if it will be the last one I will ever see. Fortunately, since they are used heavily in coal train service, there is a chance I will get to add another shot to my site in the future.

An all-GE cast leads this westbound coal empty toward Chemical. You can see a little bit of Welton Reservoir on the left side of the frame. This reservoir was built about ten years ago to store additional water for the city. You may also notice that the third unit looks to be an unpatched Espee unit. It is SP 107, one of only eleven unpatched Espee AC4400CW at the time of this photo.

While the demand for coal has certainly gone down some, you can still find plenty of coal trains running on the Moffat. One such example was this Energy-bound empty, headed west on a simply beautiful March afternoon.

Three sharp looking GP40-2s throttle up and put on a bit of a show as they head west toward Barbara's Gulch. The trio is having no problem pulling the five covered hoppers west. The West Local only has a single customer (west of Leyden) left to serve and that customer generally only needs a handful of covered hoppers each week. Of note, the lead GP40-2 (UP 1359) was DRGW 3118 ten years ago.
