Just minutes after the sun has crept over the eastern horizon, this westbound coal empty is rolling west on welded rail just west of Leyden.

A quartet of GEs lead a westbound coal empty, headed for the North Fork Branch in western Colorado, west at dawn along CO-72 near Chemical (MP 14.5). While it is a simply beautiful morning, a little bit of haze is clinging to the Denver skyline.

Early morning shadows make for an interesting picture of this westbound coal empty as it makes its way west on the main track at Rocky. The train is just about to swing to the right and start the climb through Little Ten Curve.

A slightly different angle from Coal Creek Canyon. This westbound is swinging around the curve at the base of the canyon in the early morning light. With nothing headed east, the train has clear signals all the way to Tolland.

The rising sun offers up a nice silhouette shot at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. A westbound coal train crosses over CO-72 as it loops around and prepares for the climb up to Tunnel 1 and Plainview.

After getting held up briefly at Leyden, this coal empty is working hard out the west end of the siding as it crosses over Indiana Street, the bridge still retaining its "Rio Grande" fly lettering.

I couldn't resist this shot. Since GE engines very much dominate the once all-EMD Moffat, it is nice to see an SD70ACe make an appearance on a coal train from time to time.

This ballast train is headed out the west end of Leyden on a Friday afternoon. It started at Rolla, CO and is now headed west toward Nephi, UT. After running over Soldier Summit, it will most likely run around the wye at Provo and head down UP's Sharp Subdivision. I enjoyed, for the second time in three days, catching a pair of SD70Ms leading a train on the Moffat.
