An empty UP coal train blasts out the west end of Rocky on its way west. The train has 143 cars and is nearly 8,000 feet long. The original symbol had the train headed for the Antelope Mine in Wyoming, but the termination point was changed to Provo, UT. The reason? Not entirely sure. Perhaps the train will load at the Savage load out near Price? Perhaps the cars are going in to storage? Only UP knows for sure...

The westbound Zephyr comes out of west Rocky on an Approach (yellow) signal. The Zephyr has what has become a typical seven Superliner consist. Standard in the current days of the pandemic. Typically, at this time of year, the train would have eight or nine Superliners. Waiting in the siding at Eisele (Clay) is BNSF's Provo-Denver. It has 54 cars today, with four on the point and two DPUs on the tail end.

As the MNYGJ climbs out of Rocky, it is soon going to have a minor issue. The train is currently operating using a PTC software program called "Trip Optimizer". That software will crap out just ahead, causing the power on the train to drop to idle. The engineer will shut the software down and manually throttle the train back up. The train slowed to about 3 MPH when that happened, but the engineer kept it from stalling out.

Yesterday's MNYGJ could not depart until today do to a shortage of rested crews in Denver. With an afternoon departure, the train is about to knock down a clear signal at West Rocky and climb up Big Ten. The train is just over 7,000 feet long!

At first glance, it certainly may appear as though the Zephyr and the UP manifest are headed the same direction on parallel tracks. While they are indeed both heading geographically south right now, they are on the same track. The Zephyr is climbing out of Rocky and will go around Big Ten Loop, ascending in elevation up to Eisele where the UP manifest is waiting to meet the Zephyr.

Whereas coal used to be the main commodity on the Moffat, with as many as 9 loads and 9 empties running in a 24 hour period in 2007, today it has become extremely scarce! The Moffat will now go days, weeks, or even months between coal trains. I was lucky to catch one on the second day of summer, seen here climbing west out of Rocky toward Big Ten.

Approaching the west switch of Rocky, the California is running about two hours late, but has clear signals westbound. It'll meet an eastbound waiting in the siding at Tolland.

An eastbound light power move highballs west Rocky while a westbound sand train sits on the main at Eisele. Shortly before this shot was taken, the light power moved met the sand train. The sand train has not departed yet because the dispatcher is having difficulty getting the west switch at Eisele to throw from the siding to the main.
