Hard to believe that UP 1943 is already close to three years old! I last saw it almost exactly a year prior to this shot when it led a passenger special on the Moffat at the end of September 2019. Today, it came out of North Yard to be used as the lead unit on the MNYGJ, currently tied down in the siding at Rocky.

An ES44AC and an AC4400CW bring up the tail end of the MNYGJ, currently tied down in the siding at Rocky. UP 1943, sitting on the main, will be the new leader for the manifest. The crew is currently working to link these two units as DPUs to UP 1943. Once complete, the crew will take UP 1943 to the west end of the siding and back on to the train.

UP 1943 is just out the west end of Rocky and has come to a stop. It now will wait for DS-80 to throw the switch and flag the unit back east in to the siding and onto the MNYGJ, currently tied down on the siding.

The crew for UP 1943 is currently in the process of tying the specially-painted SD70ACe on to the point of the MNYGJ in the siding at Rocky. Once tied on, the conductor will start to knock off brakes on the train so the train can proceed west. Note the incredible levels of smoke currently filling the sky from nearby forest fires.

A look just about straight on to the front of UP 1943, the new leader on the MNYGJ. Not sure what happened to the previous leader, but for whatever reason, it was removed from the train here at Rocky. UP 1943 was brought out of North Yard this morning to serve as the new leader for the trip west.

UP 1943 and the MNYGJ sit on the siding on the inside of Little Ten Curve near the west end of Rocky. The train was tied down here overnight and, for some reason, the original leader was removed. This morning, UP 1943 was brought out of North Yard by a new crew. The crew is currently working on untying the train to take it west toward Grand Junction.
