BNSF's Provo-Denver manifest, the near-daily manifest BNSF runs over the Moffat, sits idly in the siding at Leyden. BNSF's 31st Street Yard had no room for the train, so it was tied down in the siding here. A BNSF crew will be dispatched to retrieve it once room opens up.

A new housing subdivision, named Canyon Pines, is under construction near Tunnel 1 in western Arvada along the Moffat Tunnel Sub. This subdivision has been rumored for 20 years, but only recently started to come to fruition. An eastbound oil train descends down the 2% grade from Tunnel 1 as the intersection of Moffat Road and Canyon Pines Drive is in the foreground, the asphalt having been laid for the new roads.

As a loaded UP oil train descends down the Moffat from Tunnel 1, we get a glimpse of the progress on the Canyon Pines Subdivision housing development in the top-left. As you can see, the asphalt has been laid for the main road (Canyon Pines Drive). The unearthed dirt between the road and the tracks is land available for purchase for construction of future homes.

A trio of UP GEs lead a long, loaded eastbound oil train through the control point at the east end of Eisele (Clay). The train will enjoy clear (green) signals for the remainder of the journey to one of the bypass tracks at North Yard.

The engineer on this eastbound oil train is offering up a peace sign for the shot as the train rolls slowly out of the east end of Eisele (Clay). Just ahead, the train will wrap around Big Ten Curve and head down to Rocky, continuing east toward Denver. UP 6737 started life in December 1994 as CNW 8837!

An ES44AC (UP 5390) and an ET44AC (UP 2618) are the two DPU units bringing up the tail end of this unit oil train. Meanwhile, three GEs on the head end descend through the lower S-Curve of Big Ten.

It is a beautiful afternoon on the final day of April for 2023 as a unit UP oil train descends from Big Ten Loop, through the S-Curve, toward the west switch of Rocky. The terrain is starting to green up a bit after a fairly wet winter. Most of the tress in the area are still largely naked as a colder-than-average March and April have delayed the appearance of leaves.

The tank cars on this unit oil train cast some long shadows in the evening light as the train proceeds on a clear (green) signal east on the main at Rocky.

A good overview of the tracks from the east end of Eisele (Clay) on the top right, around Big Ten, down in to Rocky and through Little Ten, and out the east end of Rocky toward the eastern plains. The Denver skyline is clearly visible in the distance. A unit oil train snakes its way east at Rocky.

Oil trains have become something of a replacement to the coal trains that ran over the rails for decades. The volume of oil trains is still nowhere near what the volume of coal trains once were. Between BNSF and UP, there is an oil train once every few days lately. Conversely, there's only been a coal train once every one or two months. Here, a UP oil train makes its way east on the main at Rocky.
