As somebody that grew up on (EMD-only) Rio Grande, it is great listening to the classic two-stroke prime movers in RMRX 8020 and RMRX 8021 as they pull the Rocky Mountaineer west up the grade.

I should probably clarify my statement of Rio Grande being "EMD-only". While it is true that, over the years, Rio Grande did own some GE and ALCO units, by the time I was old enough to go train chasing with my dad, Rio Grande was an EMD-only railroad.

GP40-3s RMRX 8020 and RMRX 8021 kick out a bit of exhaust as the train throttles up approaching the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. In the next three days, the train will run out to Moab, UT and then return back to Denver, CO.

The clouds have descended in the area, creating a layer of fog. Headlights from the westbound Rocky Mountaineer cut through the fog as the train approaches the Blue Mountain grade crossing.

AMTK 164 was just released from the shop with a fresh new coat of Phase IV heritage paint. This is its maiden voyage wearing the new scheme, and it was not a secret! Many railfans from the Denver area showed up to get a few shots of pristine paint.

Freshly painted AMTK 164 leads the westbound Zephyr toward the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. From this perspective, AMTK 164 looks to perfectly match the scheme on the Superliners as the second P42 (wearing a Phase V scheme) is hidden.

When you think January, you likely think winter, and January 2023 is certainly delivering on that image! While the Front Range of Colorado is no stranger to snow, it is fairly typical for a storm to hit, and 2-3 days later, the snow has all but melted. However, this winter, frequent storms every few days and colder-than-average temperatures have resulted in the snow sticking around. Passengers enjoy the frigid winter scene from the confines of the westbound Zephyr here at the Blue Mountain road crossing.

What do you think of this colorful paint scheme? As you can see, The scheme honors 50 years of the program Operation Lifesaver. The program started in 1972 and continues to operate to promote safety around railroad tracks to this day. This unit was unveiled by Amtrak in January 2022.

Kicking up a little snow along the main, the westbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain Road. It has been a rather brutal winter for much of the United States, and once again, snow is falling here in the Denver-Metro area.

AMTK 203 is painted in a special "Operation Lifesaver" scheme, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the program. Amtrak unveiled the paint scheme about a year ago, in January 2022.

It is a somewhat gloomy scene just east of Tunnel 1 as a crazy late (17 hours) eastbound Zephyr crosses the Blue Mountain grade crossing. The train should have crossed this crossing around 5:30pm the previous night, but snow storms on Donner Pass have been wreaking havoc on rail traffic. This train departed Emeryville, CA seven hours late two days earlier, and lost an additional ten hours on the journey toward Denver.

Shades of the past mix with the present as AMTK 161, sporting a version of the original Phase I "Bloody Nose" scheme (complete with the Pointless Arrow), approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. Incredible that Amtrak has been roaming the rails in the United States for over half a century!

As a very late eastbound Zephyr approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain, we can take note of the progress on the Canyon Pines neighborhood slowly being built in to the side of the mountain above the tracks in the distance.

Four ALC-42s lead a 2 hour late Zephyr at the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. Alas, the light had faded enough that it wasn't quite possible to get a shot without some motion blur visible. The Zephyr has been running on yellow signals since Crescent, following a slow-moving loaded UP oil train.
