Roughly halfway through the Tunnel District, this Provo, UT-bound BNSF manifest pulls hard as it approaches the grade crossing at Crescent. The sun is trying to break through the cloudy skies that have dominated the Front Range of Colorado for much of the month of May.

Due to power shortages, UP has activated all (functional) units on their system. It has been pretty cool seeing some older power, such as this (standard cab) C40-8!

I don't have a ton of Snoot Nose SD40-2s on my site. First off, they weren't all that common to begin with. Second, they definitely aren't all that common on the Moffat! However, this SD40N (rebuilt by UP from an SD40-2) happened to make an appearance on this beautiful Sunday afternoon.

A pair of SD40N's that you could easily confuse if you are numerically dyslexic assist with the pulling of the MNYRO at Crescent. Unfortunately, UP 1652 has been pretty badly tagged, making for quite an eye sore.

UP stopped running manifests between Denver and Salt Lake via the Moffat for a few years in the early 2000's. When they returned in 2005, they would frequently run with near solid sets of SD70Ms. Not long after, GE ACs took over, making the power virtually identical to coal train power. However, with the recent power shortage on all the Class 1's, EMDs have been making a strong come back on Moffat manifests! Two SD70Ms and two SD40Ns (rebuilt SD40-2s) join a single GE for the journey west over the Moffat.

After stopping briefly in the siding to meet an eastbound (and allow the lead unit to cool off, as it was running too hot), this westbound MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard to Roper, UT) is now on the move again, pulling toward the west end of Crescent.

An extra P42DC has been added to the eastbound Zephyr as it comes around the corner and over the grade crossing at Crescent. The train had a standard Zephyr consist, so I'm not sure why the extra unit was there. My guess would be either that one of the two training units had a problem, or one of the three units is being transported to Chicago, perhaps for some maintenance.

11 light units proceed west on the siding at Crescent toward the west switch. By the time the light power gets there, the BNSF manifest heading east will be in the clear.

The dispatcher had a well-timed meet setup at Crescent between the eastbound BNSF manifest on the main and the westbound UP light power on the siding. It was interesting hearing both trains approaching, but not being able to see either until they were within a few hundred feet due to the fog.

Got fog? The clouds were hanging very low to the ground on this April Sunday as an eastbound BNSF manifest rounds the corner near the west switch of Crescent. It was a wonderful surprise finding a Warbonnet on the point of the eastbound.

After shooting Amtrak at the west end of Crescent, I decided to head toward the east end for the next westbound. That turned out to be the MNYGJ which was barely making 12 MPH up the hill!

UP has been doing a lot of maintenance on the Moffat between Plain and Rollins in the last few weeks. Here, a work train sits on the siding west of the crossing at Crescent. The train just go in the clear in order to allow a westbound to come through on the main.

While the tail end of the California Zephyr is bathed in morning sunlight, the train is heading for a major change in weather! On the other side of the Continental Divide in Winter Park (about 25 miles west of this location), there is over a foot of fresh snow on the ground and it is still coming down!

Just because May is less than a week away doesn't mean you can't find snow on the ground in the Rockies! The westbound Zephyr is making good time as it heads west through Crescent on a clear signal.

Never let it be said that UP dispatchers don't do their best to keep Amtrak running on time! Here, the westbound Zephyr is overtaking (passing) a manifest at Crescent. The manifest is headed for Grand Junction.
