An SD70ACe leads UP's MNYGR (Manifest from North Yard, CO to Green River, WY). The length of train varies from day-to-day. This Sunday morning, the train is an impressive 142 cars long. Over 8,000 feet in length, including the power. Here, the train is making its way across the Belt Industrial Lead, passing by the Stock Yards and about to cross over York Street.

A quartet of elephant-style units, two EMD and two GE, lead the MNYGR across a relatively full South Platte River on the Belt Industrial Lead. This is a single track, CTC line that connects North Yard (and the Moffat) with 36th Street (and the Greeley Sub).

This Phase 2 SD70M is crossing over the South Platte River as the fourth unit on an eastbound (soon to be northbound) manifest. The top of the unit has definitely seen some better days as rust has set in across the gray.

A southbound UP intermodal train approaches the diamond that crosses BNSF's Brush Sub at Sand Creek. An ET44AC and an AC4400CW are power for this relatively short train. There are plenty of puddles in the area after several inches of rail fell through the area the night before.

This southbound intermodal train is passing underneath I-270 and crossing over BNSF's Brush Sub at Sand Creek Jct. Indeed, the train is crossing the junction's namesake, Sand Creek, on its way south. The train is actually quite short, as you can clearly see the end of the train on the right side of the frame.

Echoes of the Past

At Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Station in northeast Denver, a string of Xcel Energy owned coal hoppers sit silent on slowly rusting rails. Until 2017, the plant was powered by coal from the Colorado high country. For the last seven years, the plant has been fired exclusively by natural gas. The coal trains were emptied in the rotary dump within the blue building to the left.

This blue building houses a rotary dump. When coal trains powered the power plant here, trains were pulled through this building. One car at a time, the car was secured to the track and the entire car was rotated upside down to dump out the coal. Underground conveyor belts took the coal to the plant. This rotary dump has now been silent for seven years, likely to never be active again, as the power plant is now entirely fueled by natural gas.

Xcel Energy's Cherokee Power Station, northeast of Denver, generates over a terawatt of electricity for the power grid. Until 2017, the station was powered by coal. Since then, however, the plant is powered by natural gas. Over a hundred Xcel Energy coal hoppers sit idle at the plant, their final disposition as yet unknown.

The Sunday Rocky Mountaineer is headed west across the Belt Industrial Lead, working on getting out of Denver for its journey west to Moab. The train passes through some pretty industrial areas before getting to the western suburbs, leaving the city behind.

A pair of UP SD70Ms...the same that the Rocky Mountaineer has borrowed for the last few seasons...are once again leading the Rocky Mountaineer west across the Belt Line. It is currently passing Copeland Lake just east of I-25.

BNSF 9301 leads the westbound Denver-Provo manifest at the west switch of Cliff. In the Rio Grande days, the west switch of Cliff was interesting as it was a "Y" switch. There was a bit of a diverging both for the main and the siding. UP has reconfigured it so the only turn is toward the siding.

Two SD70ACes are the bookends to a Heritage 2 C44-9W, the three units leading the westbound Denver-Provo manifest on the main at East Portal. Since Elderado Canyon near Tunnel 8, the tracks have (off and on) been following South Boulder Creek, located to the right of the tracks in the frame.

A westbound BNSF manifest is staring at a clear (green) signal on the main track leading into the Moffat Tunnel. In just a few moments, it'll be 15-20 minutes of darkness for the crew as they pass through the 6.2 mile long tunnel.

Looking from directly above the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel, we see a westbound BNSF manifest charging forward toward the tunnel that'll carry the train under the Continental Divide. There are a ton of hikers parked in the parking lot at East Portal, enjoying the July day.

It seems like there have been more C44-9Ws wearing the original Heritage scheme running around lately. These units earned the nickname "goat boats". The history there is in two parts. "Goat" comes from logo of the Great Northern railroad, from which much of the inspiration of the Heritage scheme was taken. "Boat" comes from the reference to 1st and 2nd generation GE units as "U-Boats", from their model IDs (U25B, U30C, etc).
