A last look at this Rio Grande steam crane as it backs through the yard at 36th Street. It will be temporarily stored until the weather improves and it can be moved to Granby, CO.

Forgive the slight softness of this photo. The light was starting to get scarce, but I wanted to get a shot of the UP special with Rio Grande equipment and the Denver skyline in the background.

This steam crane does not have any place to hold on to in order for a crew member to ride on the rear and protect the shove. So, two crewman walk along the tracks to ensure the tracks ahead are clear and the switches are lined.

This UP special is entering in to the south/west end of 36th Street Yard. The sun, which will disappear about ten minutes after this shot, reflects brightly off the cab of this former Missouri Pacific GP40-2

A look into the north end of UP's 36th Street Yard from the York Street grade crossing. Coors Field is clearly visible in the background. There is a clear signal for a coal load that is coming from the Belt Industrial Lead that is headed for the Limon Sub (the KP Line).

The ever-changing landscape of Denver in the 21st Century! The buildings and commuter rail increase as the freight rails, at best, stay unchanged if not decrease. A gaggle of units sit near the 36th Street yard office (seen to the right) which will soon move to the northeast.

With the construction of the RTD A-Line (Commuter Rail) from Union Station to DIA, several new pedestrian overpasses have been constructed. One such overpass crosses UP's 36th Street Yard in Denver. This offers a new perspective on the yard that was not previously possible! Here, we can see units used on locals and for switching in the yard (to the right), and some units on the "ready track" to the left. Those units (to the left) will be used on the MDVSI (Manifest, Denver, CO to Salina, KS).

Ed Dickens leans slightly out the engineer cab window of UP 844 as the train approaches the grade crossing at York Street. As the train rolls towards the photography, I think to myself thank goodness the FRA allows for exceptions to the requirement of engines having ditch lights!

UP 844 is pulling north on the Inbound Main out of UP's 36th Street Yard. The train is deadheading back to Cheyenne from Denver. Once there, UP 844 will be put away in the steam shop and the cars will likely wind up heading back to Council Bluffs, IA, where they are kept when not being used.

A pair of recently-repainted (and recently-rebuilt) SD40-2s, now designated as SD40Ns, roll in to the yard at 36th Street off the Outbound Main after spotting a string of empty well cars on a house track. In my opinion, the "baby wings" look very good on the nose of the SD40N.

While waiting for UP 844 to depart north toward Cheyenne, this local train (with a half dozen tank cars) rolls off the inbound main in to the yard at 36th Street. Interestingly, the GP38-2 working is numbered 825. This was once the number of one of UP's 4-8-4 "Northern" class steam engines, just like UP 844!

The day after the Cheyenne Frontier Days train had a successful run with UP 844, the train is now completing its process of wying (turning around) in Denver. UP 844 will need to take on water (in the "water bottle") before departing for Cheyenne.

Ed Dickens, currently manager of UP Heritage Operations (including the steam program) is behind the throttle of UP 844 as the Cheyenne Frontier Days train rolls past York Street. Dickens is giving the whistle a good pull across the grade crossing. A number of people, some on duty, some guests, join Dickens in the cab of 844.
