This is one of 35 F7As that have managed to avoid the scrapper and have been preserved out of the 3,856 originally built (2,393 F7As + 1,463 F7Bs). That's just under 1% of F7s, just under 1.5% of F7As that have been preserved. Anyway, the F7A was the 84th "car" in BNSF's HDENLAU this morning. The fact that the Front Range Sub carries very little through traffic these days definitely works to the benefit of this northbound. It is the only train on the line for at least a 230-mile stretch! BNSF's Denver-Laurel has a trio of C44-9Ws, all still wearing Heritage 2 paint. The train is passing by Lower Church Lake (which hasn't actually been a lake in a few years; it is all dried up) and approaching the US-36 underpass. It was right at this location when, in 1985, northbound and southbound Burlington Northern trains collided head on, melting the steel of the bridge. I was happy this worked out as it has been quite a while since I've done any chasing on the Front Range Sub. The sub tends to be fairly dead most of the time. It carries way less traffic than the Moffat does. Here, the 8,000+ foot long manifest is just a few miles south of the south switch of Broomfield in Westminster. To simplify the move, a P42DC was put on either end of the train. AMTK 169 was the unit on the south end and would lead for the trip back to Denver later in the afternoon. As the train approached, several cows that were close to the tracks made a mad dash away and deeper into the field. The train, which is an Employee Appreciate train, has power on both ends. When the train arrives in Boulder, it will reverse directions and return to Denver. One way it does this (from time-to-time) is by running an Employee Appreciation Special. A string of BNSF-owned passenger cars were put together and power placed on either end of the train. Two times (at 1pm and 6pm) on June 4th, the train departed Denver and ran north to Boulder on the Front Range Sub. After a brief stop in Boulder, the train returned to Denver. The local has completed switching on the Lafayette Branch. The empty centerbeam flats at the back of the train were switched out from Universal Forest Products and Lafayette Lumber Company. Both B40-8Ws were originally delivered to Santa Fe in Warbonnet colors. One was repainted to Heritage 2, the other had a very interesting "BNSF" patch job on the long hood! Traffic is light on the Front Range Sub on this day. The local has a "Box 4" to work between MP 13 and MP 45. After reassembling their train on the main track, the local pulled into the clear to wait for the train to pass.
