This 7,000-foot-long coal empty has been rerouted from the Brush Sub to the Front Range Sub due to track work. Not very common to see a long silver snake like this on the Front Range Sub!

This northbound coal empty (reroute) is so long, that it couldn't fit north of the Nickel Street crossing in Broomfield and the train had to cut the crossing! The crew on the southbound Pasco to Saginaw manifest stopped here to assist in the reassembling of the coal train.

A couple of things to note in this shot. First off, you can clearly see the unique setup of the Broomfield siding here as the mainline and siding are actually on different grades. Second, look at the explosion of development to the west! 20 years ago, there would have been nothing but empty field out there.

At Broomfield, a southbound Pasco to Saginaw manifest enters the siding at Broomfield while a rerouted coal empty sits on the main, patiently waiting. The coal empty would normally run up the Brush Sub in northeast Colorado, but track work caused a reroute up the Front Range Sub.

BNSF 3159 is the sole power on an empty southbound Boeing train. The train is headed for Wichita, KS, but is getting a two hour delay while waiting for the northbound HDENLAU.

Extended cab GP50 3159 was one of five custom built GP50s built almost exactly 21 years ago in November of 1985. These test units were designed to comfortably fit five crew members, hence the larger cab.

BNSF 3159 (ex-BN 3149) sits on the siding at Broomfield waiting for a northbound HDENLAU to come out of Denver. BNSF 3159 was one of only five GP50s to receive a specially built cab designed to comfortably fit five crew members.

Although somewhat cast in shadow, I enjoy this view of two different trains meeting each other at the siding at Broomfield. The siding and the main follow completely different terrains that differ in altitude by as much as twenty feet as you can see in this picture. The QDENTAC moves north through the siding above while the MLAUDEN moves south on the main below.

An SD70MAC (phase 2 - note the flared radiators) was the third unit on the empty sulfur train on this Sunday. The train was stopped at Broomfield to wait for a southbound that was, at the time of this picture, just south of Fort Collins!

This unit sulfur train, currently empty, is sitting in the siding at Broomfield to wait for a meet with a southbound. The third unit is CSX 4714, wearing the Dark Future paint scheme. It is quite a long way from home on this day!

A beautiful display of power (two SD40-2's in green and an Oakway SD60) sit on the MLAUDEN on the siding at Broomfield. The train is currently waiting for a fresh crew.

BNSF 7610 has only been out on the road for two week! Here, it is leading a very heavy (11,000+ tons) HLAUDEN1-17 through the S-curve near Burns Jct. The city of Broomfield is busy building a new road paralleling the tracks in the foreground.

North meets south! The southbound STCPDEN3-15 is on the main line ("bottom" track) while the QDENTAC1-19 is on the siding ("top" track). There is an interesting difference in elevation between the siding and the main at Broomfield.

A C44-9CW and two SD40-2's lead up the STCPDEN3-15 on the main at Broomfield. Winter is in full force in the high country in Colorado, covering the divide with a nice blanket of snow. BNSF 4195 will hold the main at Broomfield to wait for a northbound to pull into the clear in the siding.

A very rare engine indeed in 2005 is a classic General Electric "U-Boat". Built in the 1970's, CSX is one of the only class one railroads to still have active U-Boats on the roster. One of these rare units, CSX B36-7 #5867, made an appearance in Colorado on the MLAUDEN. At the time of this photo, the 5867 was one of 87 B36-7's still on CSX's roster (in the number range 5807-5925).
