A single SD70ACe brings up the tail end of an eastbound coal load at the east end of Chacra. The scenery heading east toward Glenwood (and Glenwood Canyon) is looking pretty good!

An eastbound UP coal load crosses underneath I-70 and follows along the Colorado River at the east end of Chacra. If you look close, you can see empty coal hoppers in the siding at Chacra. These hoppers have been sitting in the siding here for at least 6-8 months, and possibly longer!

After getting through canyon west of Glenwood Springs, the Zephyr reaches Chacra and the start of Grand Valley. The landscape opens up, allowing for much higher speeds for trains. Here at east end of Chacra, the Zephyr passes by some brilliant fall colors as it picks up speed. It will go 70+ MPH for much of the remaining trip to Grand Junction.

This is a shot that I have wanted to get for years, but never really had the capability to until now. The eastbound Zephyr is passing by stored hoppers in the siding at Chacra. The highway to the left is I-70, which the tracks more-or-less follow between Grand Junction and Dotsero.

Just east of the siding of Chacra, the eastbound California Zephyr crosses over the Colorado River to move from the north side of the river to the south side. It will remain on the south side of the river until it east of Dotsero.

I wish there had been a bit more sunlight for this shot. Unfortunately, there were just too many clouds in the sky. The eastbound Zephyr is moving through the canyon west of Glenwood Springs along the Colorado River. Because the tracks are on the south side of the canyon - and because there are not a lot of great places to pull over to shoot - there are not a lot of pictures from this canyon. Which is unfortunately because the canyon has some beautiful colors between the green foliage and the red rocks.

Trying to make up some time on the way out to Grand Junction, Amtrak 5 hustles along I-70 at Chacra, leaving Glenwood Springs behind.
