A C44AC-CTE brings up the rear of this eastbound coal train, loaded at the Somerset mine on the North Fork branch in western Colorado. The unit is facing the "wrong way", which really only means anything to railfans! In reality, thanks to DPU technology, the direction the DPU's are facing is irrelevant.

Up close and personal! A good look at the C44AC-CTE leading this eastbound coal train at Crescent. UP was the only railroad to purchase the C44AC-CTE, which looks identical to an AC4400CW. From what I understand, the differences are internal and relate to emissions standards set forth by the EPA.

UP has been doing a lot of maintenance on the Moffat between Plain and Rollins in the last few weeks. Here, a work train sits on the siding west of the crossing at Crescent. The train just go in the clear in order to allow a westbound to come through on the main.

An engine running a bit too hot has the westbound MNYRO-19 holding on the siding at Crescent with the crossing lights active. Another ten minutes after this shot and the train would be ready to continue west.

Even a day after the 4th of July, snow can still be found on the tops of mountains along the Continental Divide. In the foreground, a Roper to North Yard manifest makes its way east on a sunny summer morning. Two new ES44AC's lead the train down the mainline.

At Crescent, the westbound MNYRO is being led by an SD9043MAC on its journey west toward Roper in Salt Lake City, UT. More and more UP seems to be adopting the idea of running manifests on the Moffat with DPU. The train here is near 7,000 tons and close to 6,000 feet long. Two DPU's bring up the tail end of the train.

The sun is getting very low in the western sky (well behind the mountain at this point) as this westbound MDVPVJ (Denver to Provo) trackage rights train pulls into the siding at Crescent. The train will hold here and meet the Ski Train which was already at Rollins.

A westbound BNSF manifest is led by a New Image ES44DC at Crescent. The train is in the siding to meet the eastbound Ski Train which was already out of Cliff when the manifest entered the siding.

Amtrak 5 is only running a few minutes late as passengers enjoy the view of Gross Reservoir. The train is just coming out of the west end of Crescent, 32 miles west of Union Station, smack dab in the middle of the Tunnel District.

Even though the dispatcher has told the MNYPV that they have a clear signal, the crew still head west slowly, assuming the signal at the west end of the siding may be red. The train had Amtrak pass on the main a few minutes ago, and with the passenger train in the clear, the MNYPV can head toward the snow-peaked mountains in the distance.

After letting Amtrak 5 pass on the main, UP's MNYPV (North Yard to Provo, Manifest) gets its turn to charge west. On this day, the train was relatively short and being led by three SD70M's.

Running a bit over an hours late, Amtrak 5 heads west through Crescent under partly cloudy skies. It is almost June, but there is still plenty of snow on the peaks of the mountains along the Continental Divide.

Running right on time on its way back to Denver, the eastbound Ski Train rounds the curve at the west end of Crescent. A lot of the snow from the blizzards earlier in the year has melted away.

There is a lot to take in here in this late night shot at Crescent. Along the right of way in the distance, the trees are lit by the headlight of the eastbound MPVNY. The ghost image of the train streaks past and the flashing lights of the crossing cast a red glow on the ground. And, of course, there is also the blinking FRED on the back of the train!

On a lazy, hazy, summer morning, the Ski Train passes west through Crescent on its way west to Winter Park. The experience on the train in the summer is completely different from winter. Many of the passenger in the summer are on board just for the experience of riding the train!
