Another week to 10 days for some of them, while others are right at their peak. The train is a few hundred feet away from the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. All of these units were "B-units" (meaning they could not lead a train), and all but twelve of these former Missouri Pacific units have been retired. The train is passing under a brand new camera tower that has been placed about 100 feet east of the east portal. There are at least five cameras on the new tower pointing in various directions. The train is running on an approach signal and will stop at the west end of East Portal for about ten minutes to wait for the tunnel to vent from the exhaust of Amtrak which passed by about ten minutes earlier. The sun was far enough around the mountain to the south to illuminate the hill in the distance, but not quite far enough to the west yet to actually light the tracks. The unit is bound for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway (QTR) in China. The QTR started construction in June 2001 and will cross 715 miles when complete. Amazingly, over 600 of those miles will be over 13,200 feet above sea level, with the highest point being 16,740 feet above sea level.
