AMTK 138 and AMTK 43 lead an on time westbound Zephyr across East Portal Road just over a mile east of the Moffat Tunnel. This spot is a pretty cool location as the tracks cross over the road, which crosses over South Boulder Creek, changing the location of all three!

On a crisp, cloudy October morning, the westbound Rocky Mountaineer makes another trip west toward Moab, UT. The "Rockies to the Red Rocks" train will continue running twice a week through the end of October. It will then shut down until the 2024 season starts in April 2024.

Just east of East Portal, the westbound Zephyr follows along South Boulder Creek and East Portal Road as it continues west toward the Moffat Tunnel. From the days before the Moffat Tunnel, the grade for Rollins Pass is visible on the left side of the frame. The old grade is now a dirt road that people enjoy driving, cycling, ATV-ing, and dirt biking on these days.

The westbound Zephyr crosses over East Portal Road just east of the siding of East Portal, about 1 1/2 miles east of the Moffat Tunnel. The Zephyr has a clear signal at the east end of East Portal, and will pick up a little speed as it will head in to the tunnel.

The westbound Zephyr is nearing the highest point of any mainline in the United States! It is currently between Tolland and East Portal at an elevation of about 9,100 feet.

The last weekend in September and/or the first weekend in October is usually the best weekend to experience fall colors in the Colorado High Country. October 2nd was no exception! An eastbound coal load departs East Portal with a scattered blanket of changing aspens covering the mountain behind.

Three of the eight units here are pulling hard on this westbound coal empty toward the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel. The train has a "double yellow" (approach diverging) signal entering the tunnel, indicating to the train that they will be taking the siding at Winter Park.

This westbound coal empty is making track speed as it prepares to enter the Moffat Tunnel. It is a beautiful September day and there are some aspens weaving in and out of the pine trees in the distance.

I knew an eastbound was coming, but I was expecting a coal load. So I was rather happy to see the eastbound MRONY being led by an SD70ACe and a C44-9W coming out of the Moffat. I was hoping for more fall colors in the shot, but the wind has already done an excellent job taking the leaves off most of the aspens around the tunnel.

A westbound coal empty makes its way west on the main at East Portal. The train was moving very slowly here as it was preparing to stop a few hundred feet ahead to shut down a bad order engine on a train tied down on the siding.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
Sometimes when you go after a train - even when things are setup just right - you can still manage to get burned! Case-in-point was this particular morning. Just west of Rollins, along East Portal Road, I had a descent lead on the Ski Train. Then, I come around a corner and see two cars both going 15 MPH (half the speed limit). With two cars on a dirt road like this, it isn't safe to pass...and they show no signs of pulling over. The Ski Train comes and blows past us! When I finally got around, I had no chance to catch back up. This was the only view of the Ski Train I got on this morning.

DS-82 instructed the engineer of UP 4517 to stop just short of the grade crossing near the east end of East Portal. Talk about following instructions! The engineer came to a stop just exactly at the grade crossing, allowing traffic to pass in both directions unimpeded!

Two SD70Ms and an SD60M lead the eastbound Roper to North Yard manifest through the siding at East Portal. The train will stop shy of the grade crossing to allow six westbound to slowly work their way west through the Moffat Tunnel.

The original BNSF paint scheme! It didn't last very long, but there are still a fare number of Heritage I units on BNSF's roster. Here, BNSF 1122 leads this MDVPVJ-05 on the main at the east end of East Portal.

At the west end of East Portal - milepost 50 - the MNYRO-01 comes to a stop on the siding. It is waiting to meet an eastbound coal load that is about to enter the tunnel in Winter Park.
