Fog has settled in at the east end of Leyden amongst fresh fallen snow from the second blizzard (in as many weeks) that hit the day before. The eastbound coal load on the siding has been tied down and won't see a crew until much later in the day.

The wind chill outside is a chilly 8 degrees (F) above zero as a major blizzard moves into the Denver area. The blizzard, just getting started here with about an inch on the ground, is expected to dump between 18 and 26 inches of snow in the next 24 hours. Unimpeded by the white stuff, Amtrak 5 makes its way west at Leyden.

A blizzard the size of which the Denver area hasn't seen since 2003 is settling in as Amtrak makes it way west - nearly on time - through Leyden.

From a photographic point of view, both Amtrak and the Ski Train run in the wrong direction at the wrong time of day. The train run west in the morning (away from the sun) and east in the evening (away from the sun). That's why it is always great to find Amtrak running over seven hours late! On this afternoon, the sun was less than two hours away from setting when Amtrak 5 came west through Leyden at 3:30pm.

Looks like UP is importing some snow from the mountains, perhaps to points east. Okay, so perhaps in reality it is just snow-covered coal that resulted from the impending blizzard set to move into the area the next day.

It is a few minutes before 7 o'clock in the morning as UP 1989 (and three fellow SD70M's) wait at a red signal at Leyden. The 3,900 foot long MPVNY-30 is waiting for North Yard to clear a spot for them to come into town.

Framed by some trees that have lost their leaves for the year on the north side of the siding at Leyden, UP 1989 and train wait their turn to enter North Yard.

After spending nearly two weeks on the western end of the Grande (in the Salt Lake City - Provo area), UP 1989 returns back to Denver. Here, it is the fourth unit on the MPVNY-30, stopped at a red signal at Leyden. Note the Denver skyline in the distance.

In the past six hours, almost three inches of snow has fallen thanks to this October Blizzard in Colorado. The Denver-Metro area was expected to get 4-6 inches, the mountains around the Moffat getting over a foot!

The accumulation of snow is quite apparent here on the nose of UP 4818. This is the trailing unit on the eastbound MRONY at Leyden, coming through just after 8:00am.

On my way in to work this morning I stopped on the north side of the tracks at Leyden and waited for the eastbound MRONY to come my way. Just 8 hours earlier, the roads were not even wet here at Leyden! Nothing like a Colorado Blizzard!!

To think the weather was reaching the 90's just six weeks ago! A snow-covered UP 4309 creeps down the main at Leyden on an approach signal to the west end.

UP 6634 leads an eastbound coal load, the CEYNX, on the main at Leyden. This train is headed for the Nixon power plant south of Colorado Springs. It is rare that I see the CSDU train on the Moffat these days. Seems like it always heads to Wyoming for Powder River Basin coal.

UP 8107 leads a coal empty west on the main track at Leyden just after 5pm. With the work window now closed west on the Moffat, a stream of six westbound hustled out of Denver! This shot was taken from the relatively new Village of Five Parks just north of Leyden.
