These units wear the paint schemes of two of my favorite railroads. The first, obviously, is Rio Grande. However, I have always like Santa Fe, particularly the blue and yellow scheme. Although this Santa Fe SD40-2 has been patched BNSF, it still looks good. The Rio Grande GP40-2 is the lead unit on the eastbound Rocky Local, and the Santa Fe SD40-2 is the third unit on a empty BNSF coal train bound for the Wildcat coal mine in Utah on the Utah Railway.

With the sun moving toward the western horizon, the Rocky Local returns eastbound rather late (near 7pm) on this the first day of May.

On a completely overcast day, the Rocky Local takes the siding with UP 1900 (former DRGW 3154) and UP 1901 (former DRGW 3155).

The last train picture I ever took with my Minolta Dimage 5 camera. The day after this picture was taken, my Canon D60 arrived. This picture is somehow fitting, don't you think?

Talk about a power transfer! On my way home from work, with the sun getting low in the western sky, I stopped at Leyden to take a picture of a westbound. As it turned out, UP was moving an amazing thirteen engines (light) west to Grand Junction.

A single SD45T-2R (although UP considers it an SD40-2T) leads up a work train on the siding at Leyden. This particular unit was originally an SD40T-2 that was rebuilt by SP into an SD45T-2R. It was then rebuilt yet again to SD40-2 specifications. In its history, this unit was originally SP 9209, then turned to SP 6832 when it was rebuilt. After the merger, it was changed to UP 4815, and finally turned to UP 2847 on September 28, 2001, to make room for the SD70Ms.

Got Power? When the power pool in Grand Junction is running a little low, UP will sometimes send "light" power west out of Denver. Here, eleven units (each no less than 4390 HP) head west out of Leyden.

My favorite tunnel motor on Rio Grande's post-merger roster was DRGW 5355. It will had a complete light package and the horn was located above the cab, not the long hood. Unfortunately, this picture was taken about six month before 5355 was repainted in armor yellow. When it was repainted, the MARS and class lights were removed.
