The Zephyr is running about four hours late on this December morning. No complaints here from a chasing standpoint as the lighting is much more favorable at noon!

It isn't too common to find a westbound UP manifest on the Moffat in the mornings these days. The MNYRO is typically called around 2pm or 3pm and, during winter, typically does not depart Denver until after dark. So what is this guy? This is the "Phippsburg Local". The symbol is the MNYPHX and it is headed for the Craig Branch.

This eastbound BNSF manifest departed Provo the day before and has traversed the former Rio Grande along with a UP manifest that is arriving at North Yard right around the time this shot was taken. Hard to tell if the BNSF train was behind the UP train for the entire trip. One or both may have stopped to switch in Grand Junction. The MRONY also had to wait for a recrew at Bond.

For the first time in roughly six weeks, the westbound Zephyr is once again departing Denver in the morning. Due to maintenance on the Moffat, the train has either be running through Wyoming, or running over the Moffat but departing Denver at 12:35pm.

The westbound Zephyr is running just a few minutes late as it approaches the east switch at Leyden. The train is moving rather slowly as it is looking at an Approach signal (yellow over red) at Leyden. An eastbound work train is getting in the clear in the siding. By the time the Zephyr can see the west end of Leyden, they will be back on a clear signal.

The lead unit, AMTK 207, is the highest-numbered P42DC on Amtrak's roster!

The clouds on this particularly afternoon were really playing havoc with the camera. Dark shadows in the foreground (on the train) contrasted greatly with the brightly lit buildings of Denver in the distance. However, you take what you can get and, on this evening, what we can get is a westbound "Public Service" coal empty. This train is running from the Xcel Cherokee Power Station in Denver, headed for the Energy Mine loadout on the Craig Branch. Once the last generator at the Cherokee Power Station switches from coal to natural gas (scheduled for 2017), that will spell the end of this coal train on the Moffat.

BNSF runs daily trackage rights trains between Denver, CO and Provo, UT. These trackage rights were granted as a condition of the UP/SP merger in 1996. Here, an eastbound manifest is getting close to its destination. If you look closely, you can see an Approach Diverging (yellow over yellow) signal near the right side of the monitor. The Denver skyline stands tall in the distance.

CitiRail is a locomotive leasing company. BNSF has leased multiple ES44ACs from them during their power shortages in the last year. While the paint scheme may be a tad bland, it is always fun seeing something different!

I have to admit that the Warbonnet paint scheme is very close to the top of my list for all-time favorite schemes. It is a joy to find one in 2015 that is still is great shape, such as this C44-9W. I will truly miss them when they are completely gone.

With BNSF experiencing a shortage of power, they leased a lot of ES44ACs from CitiRail, an engine leasing company. You can see such a unit second out, behind a very good looking Warbonnet on this eastbound manifest. The train is passing by Oberon Middle School, approaching the grade crossing at 72nd Avenue.

A Warbonnet and a leased ES44AC lead an eastbound track rights train on the Moffat. It is a clear and beautiful January day in Colorado with temperature in the mid-50's.

BNSF has offered some colorful power on freights lately. This particular Sunday was no exception! With the Flat Irons visible in the distance, a great looking Warbonnet leads the Provo, UT to Denver, CO trackage rights manifest.

The MNYGJ on the main was originally set to go west at Leyden but DS-86 asked if they could stop before reaching the west signal at Leyden. The crew said they could and DS-86 took the signal down. Slide fences was the reason for doing so. Slide fences had DS-82's territory a bit messed up so a few eastbounds needed to run before the manifest could continue west.

At the west switch of Leyden, an eastbound (empty) ballast train enters the siding. It was so fantastic seeing a trio of SD70Ms...my personal favorite model EMD has released since the SD40-2. This particular ballast train came from the area around Tunnel, CO (near Grand Junction) and is headed for Cheyenne, probably for a refill!

While I try not to overdo roster shots, how can you pass up a roster shot of a Canadian Pacific C44-9W in Colorado...in winter no less!? It seems that of the two big Canadian railroads, Canadian National is the one that tends to appear in Colorado on BNSF.
