Approaching the west switch at Leyden, this coal empty is making track speed at 35 MPH with its three units (the third being on the rear). This shot is relatively close to the location of the old west end of Leyden. It used to be a fairly short siding (under 5,000 feet) with the west end lining up with the cottonwood trees to the right. It was extended to its current 7,100 feet by Rio Grande in the early 1980's.

Got maintenance? A Loram ballast machine is doing some ballast work along the outside of the rails on the siding at Leyden. The Loram crew had hoped to be working on the main east of Leyden, but, as you can see, the dispatcher had trains to run! So, the crew took advantage off the non-mainline time and did some work on the siding. The crew was explicitly told not to work on the south side of the tracks (the inside of the curve) due to the trains coming through on the main. Always, safety first!
Interesting to note that the second-to-last unit in the consist is an SD9043MAC. It is pretty rare to find those in coal service these days as UP decided in 2009 to remove them from said service. How things have changed. The Moffat has gone from an EMD-only club to almost exclusively GE!

A BNSF empty pipe train (with a Norfolk Southern ES40DC to boot) sits in the siding at Leyden while waiting for a spot to open up in the yards in Denver. The train came from Provo, running through much of Utah and Colorado in the dark. It is supposed to be heading to Pueblo, although I don't know where the cars are going specifically once they get there; where they will get more pipe.
