The westbound California Zephyr has been running with a very good on-time performance out of Denver through most of June and into July. Of course, that is due to the fact that the Zephyr has not been running between Chicago and Denver as a result of the flooding in the mid-west! Here, the Zephyr is approaching the east switch of Leyden on a clear signal.

It is just after 5:00pm as UP's MRONY-28 finally has a clear signal into the yard after a quick crew change at Leyden. The train departed from Roper, UT - the western end of the former Rio Grande - about 39 hours earlier. An all-EMD consist (including an SD70M, an SD70ACe and an SD60) lead the train on its final eight miles.

Hopefully these passengers aren't a huge hurry to get where they are going! The westbound California Zephyr is running about 8 hours late as it approaches the east switch of Leyden shortly after 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The train was stopped for hours while running on BNSF's Ottumwa Subdivision near Woodburn, IA. Water levels had risen over the rails, causing the delay.

I had heard on the scanner on the drive home from Boulder that BN 9690 would be leading a train west, but it hadn't appeared west of Denver yet. I knew BN 9690 was an SD70MAC, and I was hoping that the train might be a coal empty. Unfortunately, the train turned out to be the Pueblo to Provo manifest...even so, when was the last time you remember an unpatched (green and cream) BN unit on the Moffat? After BN 9690 was BNSF 5950 (ES44AC) and BNSF 630, a former ATSF (Warbonnet) C44-9W.
