Three great looking, freshly painted GP40-2s provide power for the westbound Rocky Local. The local has been getting a late start the last few weeks. It hasn't been getting out of North Yard until mid-to-late afternoon.

It is only 4:40pm and light is very quickly fading in the western sky. So, since there was little light to begin with, I went for a long exposure to get a bit of blurring effect on the empty hoppers of this westbound coal train. The train is crossing Simms Street in Arvada.

This coal empty was picked up by Union Pacific in the St Louis, MO area from CSX. The train is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch for loading. The train has a clear signal at east Leyden.

A nice way to start the weekend! On the way to pick up the kids from school, I stopped along Simms Avenue to take a look at this coal load headed for Paducah, KY.

It is the time of year once again when the days get shorter and the shadows get longer! UP's daily MNYRO (North Yard to Roper) has a clear signal at the east end of Leyden.

The westbound California Zephyr has been running with a very good on-time performance out of Denver through most of June and into July. Of course, that is due to the fact that the Zephyr has not been running between Chicago and Denver as a result of the flooding in the mid-west! Here, the Zephyr is approaching the east switch of Leyden on a clear signal.

It is just after 5:00pm as UP's MRONY-28 finally has a clear signal into the yard after a quick crew change at Leyden. The train departed from Roper, UT - the western end of the former Rio Grande - about 39 hours earlier. An all-EMD consist (including an SD70M, an SD70ACe and an SD60) lead the train on its final eight miles.

Even as common as patched Espee AC4400CWs are these days, it is still pretty uncommon to catch two of them together in a consist! Such was the case on this Sunday morning though, as UP 6406 (ex-SP 360) leads a coal load east out of Leyden after meeting three westbounds. Interestingly, the train is actually headed for the power plant in Cañon City on the eastern end of Tennessee Pass!

On a typically hazy Colorado summer morning, the westbound California Zephyr picks up a little bit of speed as it heads west towards Leyden. Road work along West 72nd Avenue required Amtrak to slow a bit through the crossing.

Hopefully these passengers aren't a huge hurry to get where they are going! The westbound California Zephyr is running about 8 hours late as it approaches the east switch of Leyden shortly after 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The train was stopped for hours while running on BNSF's Ottumwa Subdivision near Woodburn, IA. Water levels had risen over the rails, causing the delay.

My first shot of the Ski Train for the 2007-2008 Ski Season! It look a while for me to get track side, but I'm pleased with the result of this first picture. The train is running right on time as the train moves along at track speed between Kipling Street and 72nd Avenue.

I had heard on the scanner on the drive home from Boulder that BN 9690 would be leading a train west, but it hadn't appeared west of Denver yet. I knew BN 9690 was an SD70MAC, and I was hoping that the train might be a coal empty. Unfortunately, the train turned out to be the Pueblo to Provo manifest...even so, when was the last time you remember an unpatched (green and cream) BN unit on the Moffat? After BN 9690 was BNSF 5950 (ES44AC) and BNSF 630, a former ATSF (Warbonnet) C44-9W.

This coal empty, which is shuttling power to Grand Junction to be used in DPU's for eastbound coal loads, is on the approach to Radium. The Colorado River runs on the right side of the image, and Gore Canyon is actually visible just off of center to the right in the distance.

A UP coal empty with eight units (only of which three are actually active and working) makes it way west out of Little Gore Canyon west of Azure. The train will wrap around the mountain in the foreground and head through the siding of Radium about two miles ahead of the train.

The head end of the train is about a half mile ahead of the hoppers in the foreground. The hopper are about to be pulled into Tunnel 40 in Little Gore Canyon.
