After the Spring Blizzard from earlier in the week, some pretty descent snow drifts formed in places along the tracks. An eastbound coal load passes drifts that are about three feet deep at this point on either side of the tracks.

As a westbound coal empty charges west out of Leyden, a group of horses run for cover back to the barn! The Denver skyline is visible in the distance.

A look at the eastbound Ski Train at Chemical, but from a slightly different angle! No problem getting a shot from the north side of the tracks on a cloudy day like this one.

The California Zephyr has, of course, changed much over the course of fifty years! In the last ten years though, it is very common for the Zephyr to have eight Superliners: three sleepers, three coaches, a diner and a lounge car. One of the cars - either a sleeper or a coach - was missing on this particular day.

UP is doing a lot of work on the Cane Creek Sub between Brendel, UT and Potash, UT. The line is about to see a couple trains daily, working to clean up Uranium Tailings near Moab. The project will move 12 million tons of tailings over the next 10-20 years! This ballast will be laid along the tracks about 250 miles west of this shot.

I'm not certain if I'll ever seen another unpatched Espee AC4400CW or not. UP 6417, seen here as the end DPU on an eastbound coal load in front of the Denver skyline, has worn a yellow patch now for nearly seven years! It switched from SP 371 to its new number on January 14, 2002.

The clouds offer a low ceiling to the west, covering up the mountains above 6,000 feet or so. A eastbound coal train headed for Memphis, TN (for interchange) has clear signals the rest of the way into Bypass Track 2 where it will receive a crew change.

This coal train had very smooth sailing for the last 70 miles of its trip! It's had clear signals since Tabernash, only having to stop once to check a dragging equipment detector near Rollins. Here, the train is approach Leyden, about 11 miles away from its crew change point in Denver.

Running about 45 minutes late, the westbound California Zephyr heads west out of Leyden on a clear signal. The Christmas Eve train is taking some of those last minute travelers to their destination for Christmas!

Sometimes people have been known to "moon" Amtrak. On this night, Amtrak was streaking the photographer! Temperature was about 22 degrees, wind was blowing hard and the snow was falling. I setup for a shot near MP 14 to grab the eastbound Zephyr zipping by.

Ahh, if only Amtrak had a car like this! I'd hang out in it all day long. Union Pacific's observation car Idaho not only has a great picture window, but it is fully equipped with satellite link up. Here, it is brining up the rear of a UP special, just west of Leyden.

An up close and personal look at a relatively new ES44AC leading a UP Special west near Leyden. In fact, you can see the west switch of Leyden in the distance just to the left of the unit.

For the past month or so, Union Pacific has been running a lot of passenger trains around its system. Various Officer's Specials and Engineering Specials. One such special was headed west out of Denver on the Moffat, just west of Leyden here.
