UP's daily North Yard to North Platte (MNYNP) manifest is heading north on the Greeley Sub near 96th Avenue. The train is usually a pretty good length and today is no exception! The three units on the point are lead 106 cars on their way to the largest rail yard in the world.

It is a cold, overcast January afternoon as this eastbound Provo-Denver manifest passes by C&S Junction. No shortage of power on this trackage rights train! It breaks down to five C44-9Ws, an ES44DC, and an SD75M.

Wow! This unit hasn't been around too terribly long and it has already been beat up quite a bit. This is a Kansas City Southern de Mexico SD70ACe in the "Retro Belle" scheme on the Denver to Kansas City manifest.

I thought that this was worth posting because it is a sight that is becoming less and less common! SD70MACs used to rule on BNSF coal trains. Now, AC4400CWs, ES44ACs and SD70ACes are on coal trains all the time. I thought it was a nice bonus that both units were wearing the Heritage II scheme.

The clouds offer a low ceiling to the west, covering up the mountains above 6,000 feet or so. A eastbound coal train headed for Memphis, TN (for interchange) has clear signals the rest of the way into Bypass Track 2 where it will receive a crew change.

I'm not certain if I'll ever seen another unpatched Espee AC4400CW or not. UP 6417, seen here as the end DPU on an eastbound coal load in front of the Denver skyline, has worn a yellow patch now for nearly seven years! It switched from SP 371 to its new number on January 14, 2002.

There had to be at least one black and white shot from the day! This coal empty is not actually headed for any mine an western Colorado. It is on its way to the Savage mine on the CV Spur just outside of Price, UT. Here, the train is coming across Lamar Street, some 430 miles east of the mine.

The last two DPU units on a westbound coal empty streak past the new "quiet" crossing at Pierce Street. The City of Arvada worked with UP to install three such crossing at Pierce, Kipling and 72nd Avenue. As a result, trains no longer use their horns at these crossings.
