The Valmont coal empty just received its final warrant of the day, taking it from MP 17 to the Restricted Limits at Clear Creek. Despite slippery rails (thanks to the late summer rain shower), it didn't take long for the train to reach track speed.

The DENTAC (Denver, CO to Tacoma, WA) is moving north at track speed on the main track as the Buck Local patiently waits in the siding. After reassembling their train on the main track, the local pulled into the clear to wait for the train to pass. After it cleared MP 16, the local got a warrant and backed out onto the main and proceeded into town.

The Buck Local brought cars along from Longmont when it arrived at Broomfield. Several cars did not need to go down the Lafayette branch, so the local got permission from the dispatcher to leave the cars sitting out on the main track. Fortunately, the dispatcher didn't have anything coming out of town immediately, so this did not cause any bottlenecks. Here, the train has dropped off its caboose on the Lafayette branch and is picking up its train on the main.

Seeing as how it is only a matter of time before the Heritage paint scheme disappears, it seems prudent to try to shoot it as often as possible! BNSF 1020 was the third of three units on the HDENLAU.

Sitting at Burns Junction near the north end of the siding of Broomfield, BNSF 5082 leads the daily Denver to Laurel, MT manifest. The train will hold for the Valmont coal empty and the Longmont Turn.

I always enjoy shooing meets between trains at Broomfield because the siding and the main are on completely different alignments throughout most of the siding. This is because the tracks used to be two different (main)lines, owned by different railroads. Here, the QDENTAC is on the siding, which is several feet higher than the HLAUDEN on the main.

All three orange paint schemes that BNSF has had are represented in this picture! The QDENTAC is being led by a Heritage 2 C44-9W and a Heritage C44-9W. The single DPU on the HLAUDEN sports the New Image scheme.

In the foreground, the HLAUDEN heads south on the main track while the QDENTAC is coming north on the siding above. The crews of both trains talked to each other to time the meet as well as they could. The QDENTAC is 6,700 feet long and the HLAUDEN is 7,700 feet long. This means car traffic at Nickel Street is going to be blocked for awhile!

The second northbound for the day, the QDENTAC, is pulling into the siding at Broomfield. This doublestack train is one of the longest that runs in the Denver-metro area. Originating at the Rennicks Intermodal Facility in Denver, the train is headed for Tacoma, WA.

The weather was all over the place on this Spring day! There was a little bit of sunshine, a bit of wind, overcast skies, lightning, thunder...and a LOT of rain. BNSF's Denver, CO to Laurel, MT manifest pulls down the main at Broomfield where it will wait to meet its southbound counterpart. Dark lightning clouds hover ominously to the east.

Third out on BNSF's Laurel-Denver is this somewhat pink-looking Warbonnet SD75I. The SD75 is rated at 4,300 HP, which is 300 more than the SD70.

At the north end of Broomfield, a southbound BNSF Laurel-Denver has a warrant all the way into town. It is a very drizzly and cold afternoon ahead of a possible Spring blizzard.

After cutting away from their train, these GP60Ms are heading south down the siding at Broomfield. The will return north on the main and then back into the siding and attach to their train. That will allow them to return to Longmont.

This GP60M has quite a bit of patch work on it! Why? The unit number might sound familiar...this was one of the units on the northbound that derailed in June 2008 after hitting a tree stump in the tracks. Here is a shot of the unit sitting outside Homestead House after the derailment.

With a track warrant all the way from south siding switch of Broomfield to MP 72 in Fort Collins, the Denver-Laurel freight heads west into the setting sun at Burns Junction. The caboose (now referred to as a "shoving platform") sits on the Lafayette Industrial Lead.
