Time to head east! With a fresh crew on board, this coal load pulls away from Phippsburg to start the 167 mile journey back to Denver. With the recent departure of a westbound empty, only one train will be left in the yard after this load is gone.

A nice overall shot of Phippsburg with a trio of trains sitting in the yard. Interesting to note that the train on the far left has three mid-train swing helpers, for a total of seven units on the train.

Near the east end of Phippsburg in the early dawn light, the yard is currently loaded up with a trio of trains waiting for crews. The train on the left is loaded and ready to head east while the other two will continue west to load at the mine at Energy.

Another BNSF coal train utilizing some trackage rights to run on the Moffat? Nope! This coal train is 100% Union Pacific. BNSF is paying back UP some power-sharing hours. UP decided to keep all seven units together and here are five of the seven (the other two are bringing up the rear)! The train started off at the Cherokee Power Plant on the Belt Line and is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

A cloud is just about to set in and kill the nice evening light here. Fortunately, a bit of light broke through the clouds on the head end of this westbound coal empty. The red castle in the distance is a landmark in the city of Westminster. Today, it the campus for the Bellevue Christian school.

A UP officer special, the SGJSS-14, leaves the mountains behind as it prepares to hit the plains of eastern Colorado. Coal Creek Canyon is visible directly above the train. UP 6936 - the sole operating DDA40X - leads up the 11 car special.

Union Pacific's dispatchers do a nice job keeping the westbound GrandLuxe Rail Express running on clear signals. In the distance (above the front half of the train), you can see a westbound BNSF manifest working its way through Clay. The manifest would ultimately hold in the siding at Plain for the passenger special to pass.

Formerly known as the American Orient Express (and now the GrandLuxe Rail Express) heads west for the second (of seven) days spent along the rails between Denver and San Francisco. Unlike in 2005 (the last time the train ran west on the Moffat), this year the train is led by three (leased) P42's instead of just two.
