On a beautiful September 11th, 2011, the westbound California Zephyr is running right on time as it approaches the east switch of Rocky. Due to flooding in the mid-west, the Zephyr is currently only running between Denver and Emeryville, CO.

Here is an interesting find on the back of the MNYGJ! A Herzog machine is being transported from Denver to Grand Junction. This was in fact a topic of confusion briefly between the dispatcher and the train. They had thought this was a single car, when it fact it is two cars on the manifest. The dispatcher thought an extra car had been picked up from North Yard.

The MNYGJ is exceptionally long on this particular Sunday. According to the crew on the head end, the train is 6,200 feet long! Six units (3 on the point and 3 mid-train, just visible to the right) are charged with getting the huge manifest west to Grand Junction.

Although it is only 3,000 feet long, this train still weighs close to 7,000 tons. Rocks (ballast) is just about the heaviest thing trains transport. Gone are the days when you'd find scoria in these ballast cars. UP gets its ballast from quarries in Wyoming.

Here is something rather interesting. As UP 4158 passed by me, I noticed that it is labeled as an SD70M-2 on the cab. I have no clue why as it was delivered, at least, as an SD70M. The trucks do look fairly new and perhaps that explains it, but I'm not sure.

This empty rail train just dropped off its rails along the Overland route between Elko and Wells, NV. Now empty, the train is returning to Pueblo where it will pick up more rail from Colorado Fuel and Iron.

BNSF's daily Denver to Provo manifest works its way west through Barbara's Gulch. A fall storm moves in to the Denver area, somewhat obscuring the skyline in the distance.

BNSF's QDVPVJ was long enough (or, more precisely, heavy enough) to merit a pair of C44-9Ws pushing on the tail end. The nice surprise here was the (extremely clean) Warbonnet, seen here pushing on the train through Barbara's Gulch.

This rather sad looking GP40-2 has definitely seen better days! The graffiti-covered unit is the fourth unit on the Denver-Provo manifest. It is DIC (Dead In Consist) and will be dropped of in Grand Junction, CO where it will be used for local BNSF switching.

Hot on the heals of the MNYRO is BNSF's QDVPVJ which runs from Denver, CO to Provo, UT. The train is running very slowly through Barbara's Gulch on a yellow (approach) signal. The train is prepared to stop at east Rocky in the event the signal is red.

Coming through the west end of Barbara's Gulch, the MNYRO is working hard to move it's 6,000+ foot train west. The train has three units on the point and two swing helpers cut into the middle of the train! The train is roughly 11,000 tons.

After Colorado Railcar (owner of the Grand Luxe Express) went belly up in 2008, I was skeptical if I'd ever have another chance to get a shot of the Grand Luxe Express cars leaving. Fortunately, on this day, the cars are being sent to Burnham where employees of Phil Anschutz will work to get the cars into good working order.

A pair of fairly clean UP ES44AC's lead up a deadhead special for the former Grand Luxe Express. The two Amtrak P42s had issues in California and needed a little help from UP! The train is running nearly 24 hours behind schedule here as the train wraps through Barbara's Gulch.

Shortly after 8:00pm, UP's MRONY heads east out of Rocky through Barbara's Gulch. The light was all but gone at this point, so I setup for a "watch the train blur by" shot. UP 1989 was the second unit on the consist, as you can somewhat see in the shot.

The MNYRO is approaching the west end of Barbara's Gulch where the train will find a green signal at the east end of Rocky. It seems appropriate that a UP unit, the DRGW Heritage unit, and a (patched) Espee unit lead up the train. Now if the Heritage unit was on the point and the Espee unit wasn't patched, that'd be a whole lot better!
