A Herzog machine is being transported from Denver to Grand Junction. This was in fact a topic of confusion briefly between the dispatcher and the train. They had thought this was a single car, when it fact it is two cars on the manifest. The dispatcher thought an extra car had been picked up from North Yard. According to the crew on the head end, the train is 6,200 feet long! Six units (3 on the point and 3 mid-train, just visible to the right) are charged with getting the huge manifest west to Grand Junction. Rocks (ballast) is just about the heaviest thing trains transport. Gone are the days when you'd find scoria in these ballast cars. UP gets its ballast from quarries in Wyoming. As UP 4158 passed by me, I noticed that it is labeled as an SD70M-2 on the cab. I have no clue why as it was delivered, at least, as an SD70M. The graffiti-covered unit is the fourth unit on the Denver-Provo manifest. It is DIC (Dead In Consist) and will be dropped of in Grand Junction, CO where it will be used for local BNSF switching. The train is running very slowly through Barbara's Gulch on a yellow (approach) signal. The train is prepared to stop at east Rocky in the event the signal is red. The train has three units on the point and two swing helpers cut into the middle of the train! The train is roughly 11,000 tons. Fortunately, on this day, the cars are being sent to Burnham where employees of Phil Anschutz will work to get the cars into good working order. The light was all but gone at this point, so I setup for a "watch the train blur by" shot. UP 1989 was the second unit on the consist, as you can somewhat see in the shot. It seems appropriate that a UP unit, the DRGW Heritage unit, and a (patched) Espee unit lead up the train.
