Union Pacific installed a new signal here (on the left) about a decade ago, but still has yet to activate it. Instead, an old Rio Grande signal displays a green signal, indicating the next three blocks are unoccupied. This signal is visible for US-85, and I have specific memories of looking at this signal when I would go out train chasing with my dad when I was a kid. This old signal is specifically is very nostalgic for me!

Unfortunately, it was well after sunset when the Circus Train finally departed south out of Denver. The last shot I was able to get was a times shot of the train on Main 2 at Kalamath Street, about 2 1/2 miles south of town.

A BNSF southbound without a BNSF unit in sight. Heck, there's not even a unit from a western railroad in sight! BNSF's Denver, CO to Amarillo, TX is making good time on the approach to Castle Rock.

At Sedalia, there is a pretty massive fill that was built for both tracks to keep them on close to the same grade. This shot is looking up at the tail end DPU of a southbound coal load on Main 1. You can see Main 2 just barely visible on the far left side of the photo.

In my (very humble) opinion, the SD40-2 (and T-2) has the best profile shot of darn near any units ever produced. I really enjoyed catching two of them, along with an SD60, on a southbound manifest on the Joint Line in 2010!

After receiving a new track warrant (with authority extending further south), this BNSF manifest (with very colorful power) throttles up to continue pulling south.

These three classic EMDs are working to pull this manifest south on Main 1 over a (currently dry) creek in Louviers.

Nope, I honestly didn't make a quick trip up to Winnipeg in Canada! Canadian Pacific was repaying BNSF some power miles in the form of two SD40-2s and a (SOO) SD60. The train is coming down through Hogan's Alley on Main 1. The tower at Elitch Gardens is visible in the distance.

BNSF coal trains on the Joint Line typically run with a pair of units (SD70-series or a GE equivalent) on the point and a pair of DPU's pushing on the rear. These train tend to be slightly underpowered and can be very slow climbing up to the Palmer Divide. Recently, BNSF has been running more of these trains with an additional manned unit on the tail end from Big Lift (south of Denver) to Palmer Lake. Here, a single SD70MAC is returning north to Big Lift to await its next assignment south.

I love the town of Sedalia! I remember going there many times with my dad to watch trains when I was growing up. Here, a BNSF coal load pulls up the grade and into town on its journey south toward Palmer Lake.

In Louviers, yet another BNSF coal load makes its way south on Main One through the Colorado snow. An SD70ACe leads the way as the train just passed the detector at MP 21.3 and the train now approaches Airport Road.

The two main tracks between the yards and South Denver tend to be run following a left-hand rule. Now this is CTC, so anything is possible, but more often then not, northbounds seem to run on Main One and southbounds on Main Two. Such is the case here on this snowy November day.

A southbound coal load rolls south on Main Two and a coal empty heads north on Main One. All the while, I stand at MP 2 in the lightly falling snow!

Looking at this unit covered hopper train, it is not difficult to see how it got the nickname "earth worm". This grain train is headed south on Main 2.

21 miles south of Denver and BNSF 5959 has this 76-car coal load moving well at Louviers. The train is running on an approach signal as there is a longer, slower coal load not far ahead. Not the coal empty heading north on Main Two in the distance. The beauty of directional running!
