A pair of SD70ACes bring up the tail end of an eastbound coal load that has just crossed South Boulder Creek east of Tolland. More SD70s have appeared on the Moffat lately. Some speculation as to the reason has to due with the upcoming closing of Burnham. Burnham has primarily serviced GEs for the past 15 years. With it closing, UP not be as picky as to what power makes it into Denver.

This was a tough shot to get due to the drastic difference in exposure between the shaded train and bridge in the foreground and the sunlit mountains in the distance. However, for the sake of a former CNW AC4400CW - whose former number is clearly showing through - it was worth posting.

Got ballast? With Union Pacific diligently installing a new main track between C&S Junction and Arvada, one of the key components is, of course, ballast! This train will dump some of the ballast needed for Main 2.

The mid-train swing helpers on this coal train are crossing over South Boulder Creek. The second unit is of particular interest...and ES44AC! It is a little uncommon to see newer AC power (i.e. ES44ACs and SD70ACes) on coal trains. UP's AC4400CWs and C44AC-CTEs are definitely the dominate work horses on Colorado coal trains these days. One additional thing to not about this picture is the third unit, UP 6316. Although you really can't tell from this shot, Espee scarlet and gray probably lies under that armor yellow for that units used to be SP 271!

It is quite a hike to get to this spot, but it is well worth the effort! From this wonderful perch, not only can we observe this eastbound coal load crossing South Boulder Creek, but we can see a manifest in the siding at Tolland, and of course the Continental Divide! The divide is shrouded in clouds as a September storm pushes its way east.

As the technology has become more and more reliable, Union Pacific is running (remote controlled) DPU's on manifests in addition to coal trains. The North Yard to Roper manifest was no exception on this morning, with a C44AC-CTE and an SD9043MAC shoving on the tail end.

About a half mile from the east switch of Tolland, the tracks cross over from the far side of South Boulder Creek to the near side (with respect to the road). Coming around the curve to the bridge which takes the tracks across, the MNYRO is on the move. The train will enter the siding at Tolland to wait for an eastbound coal train that was in the Moffat Tunnel at the time this picture was taken.

A couple of branches from an aspen tree frame the lead unit on the westbound Zephyr quite nicely as the train head west on the main at Tolland.

It is still a few weeks too soon for the aspens to change color, even in the Colorado high country. However, this is still a nice scene as the westbound California Zephyr has clear signals through Tolland. Three more miles and the passengers will be stuck in the darkness of the Moffat Tunnel for about 15 minutes.

The sun is in perfect position to light this westbound coal empty heading west on the main at Rollins. Some fresh ballast was recently laid down on the main.

South Boulder Creek is running rapidly east as this westbound coal empty charges up the valley. After getting stuck at Crescent for a couple of hours, the Grand Junction bound freight won't have to stop again until Winter Park.

This is certainly a shot that you have probably seen a hundred times from the west end of Rollins. However, I included it mainly because of what you can see in the distance behind the train. A track inspector is on the rails, following the train west. Talk about train chasing!

A new crew is getting ready to take the coal empty on the right west out of Rollins. However, they aren't quite ready yet and DS-82 is running this coal empty around the other one. For trains heading east, the speed limit here is 35 MPH for passenger trains and 30 MPH for freight trains.

A coal empty enters the block at East Portal, passing signals that are less than a month old. The new eastbound signals have two heads, allowing for eastbound trains to received a yellow over yellow (Approach Diverging) aspect for when they are taking the siding at Tolland.
