Between September 6 and September 9, Union Pacific laid new tracks across a grade crossing at Lowell Blvd. These tracks, visible to the right, will become the new Main 2. Between September 19 and September 28, UP will remove the old BNSF crossing (in the foreground) and replace it as well.

What to do when the sun is directly behind the train? Well, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or, when life gives you a large glowing ball in the sky, make silhouette shots. An eastbound coal train is approaching the grade crossing at Tennyson Street.

Most days, UP runs the MNYRO, a manifest from North Yard to Roper, UT. This train, however, does not run on Sunday's. Instead, a MNYGJ runs from North Yard to Grand Junction. Here, the MNYGJ departs from Main 3 at C&S Junction. As it heads west towards Lowell Street, it passes by stacks of concrete ties which will be used in the installation of a second main track.

At Lowell Street, UP has a stretch of track down (with no ballast) that will eventually become Main 2. New grade crossing will be installed across Lowell between September 6th and September 9th.

At Lowell Street, a construction sign has been erected letting motorists know that the grade crossing will be closed from 9/6/11 until 9/9/11. During this time, Union Pacific will reconfigure the tracks across the road, adding in new tracks to accommodate the new second main and the (slightly) relocated BNSF Golden Sub.

Looking west at Lowell Street, you can see the currently missing BNSF Golden Sub, as well as the location where the tracks have been removed. This has been done to allow UP to add a second main track. Whether or not the new track will use the old BNSF alignment here (utilizing the existing grade crossing) remains to be seen.

This westbound coal empty is making track speed as it prepares to enter the Moffat Tunnel. It is a beautiful September day and there are some aspens weaving in and out of the pine trees in the distance.

The addition of new block signals at the west end of East Portal allow for this situation. The MNYGJ is about to enter the Moffat Tunnel with a double yellow (Approach Diverging). This tells the crew that they will be taking the siding at Winter Park, most likely for a meet.

We are pretty close to the highest point on any active mainline (non-excursion) in the United States! The Moffat Tunnel Sub peaks out (pardon the pun) at 9,242 feet above sea level inside the tunnel. Here, the MNYGJ is on the mainline approaching the east portal of the tunnel.

Union Pacific recently replaced the old Rio Grande signals at East Portal, putting in new LED signals! Note that westbounds can now received a yellow over yellow (Approach Diverging) to inform the crew that they will be taking the siding at Winter Park.

Strong winds are blowing the clouds all over the place...enough so that a patch of blue sky breaks free down on the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel and a Snow Bus, waiting for a signal to proceed west.

UP's Snow Bus is approaching the Moffat Tunnel with a red signal ahead. The train has been following Amtrak very closely and the tunnel must finish venting before the Snow Bus can follow.

Well, there is late and then there is really late. It is 9:00am on Saturday morning and the eastbound California Zephyr is just getting into Denver. It is running just about 14 hours late at this point! Cold weather and mechanical problems were the primary causes. This is the reason for the pair of UP units, assisting the train on its journey east.

Whoops! That's gonna leave a mark. The handbrake on this covered hopper failed to get set. The hopper was on the BNSF Golden Branch (that leads to Coors) and ended up rolling east down the line! It was going roughly 45 MPH when it hit the switch at C&S Junction and derailed. What looks like snow in the foreground are actually little plastic (non-toxic) beads, which the hopper was carrying.

Some of the first snow of the season covers the peaks in the distance as the eastbound Zephyr approaches Vasquez Road in Winter Park. Most of the leaves are well on their way to their fall color transition!
