Passing by milepost 6, the Zephyr accelerates up to track speed as it says goodbye to Denver. Just ahead at the overpass, the train will move in to the suburb of Arvada as it continues its journey west.

In this shot, the tracks from left to right represent the existing main, the Arvada siding and BNSF's Golden Sub. As construction of the second main track continues, a new track will appear in this shot and the tracks will then be as follows (from left to right): Main 1, Main 2, Arvada Siding at BNSF Golden Sub. Grading for the project appears complete, so track should be appears in the coming weeks.

During at station stop at Fraser, the Conductor pauses briefly to speak with a passenger who is gathering their luggage in preparation for boarding. Note the clear signal in the distance, indicating DS-82 is ready for us once the stop is complete.

At Fraser, the westbound Zephyr makes about a 10 minute stop. In addition to picking up and dropping off passengers, Fraser is a designated smoking stop. The Zephyr is a nonsmoking train these days, so there are a few stops where passengers may de-train for a few minutes to get their fix. This is the inside of a Superliner I Sightseer Lounge car.

Ahh, the plains of eastern Colorado! The majority of the coal trains that come down from the Moffat head east on the Limon Sub for points in Missouri, Illinois and beyond. Most trains, such as this one, have their power setup in a 2x1 configuration.

The Limon Sub had a couple of westbound trains stacked up on this Friday afternoon. The coal empty in the foreground is headed for the Bypass tracks at North Yard for a crew change. The headlight in the distance belongs to a local that is trying to make its way back to the 36th Street Yard.

This coal train is pulling into the Arvada siding to drop off all 87 of its cars. The track in the foreground is the BNSF Golden Sub leading to the Coors Brewery (among other industries). The overpass in the background is Sheridan Blvd.

The eastbound California Zephyr sits at the depot at Fraser. Passengers get to stretch their legs briefly. This is a really great spot to shoot eastbound almost any time of day or year!

The eastbound California Zephyr wraps through the east end of the siding at Tabernash after meeting BNSF's Denver to Provo manifest. Kind of interesting that this shot has two train meeting on Union Pacific track, yet neither train is a UP train!

Now that is the way to lead a BNSF trackage rights train on the Moffat! BNSF 756 - a VERY clean Warbonnet - led the QDVPVJ (Denver, CO to Provo, UT) manifest on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The train is approaching the Sheridan Blvd underpass.

After holding for about an hour at Tabernash while waiting for the MNYRO to perform some work at Fraser (which can still be seen in the siding), the MRONY is finally on the move eastbound once again. Note that practically every pine tree in the shot is purple! All those trees have died as a result of the "Beetle Bark" epidemic in Colorado.

Anybody need a slightly-used Pontiac!? As the MNYRO pulls into the siding, a very old Pontiac (feel free to comment on the year as I have no clue) sits on its bare axles in the dandelions.

The MNYRO comes to a stop at the east switch of Fraser. Here, the crew will make a cut and tie down the back portion of the train. Then, two gondolas will be set out on the house track. The hill on the right side of the shot is used for intertubing in the winter. You can also see the ski run at Winter Park in the distance, and even a ski lift atop the mountain in the upper right hand corner.

Amazing to think that trains once ran over that mountain range in the distance! On this fabulous June day, UP's MNYRO pops out of the trees and into the clearing in Fraser Valley.

UP's daily MRONY holds on the main track at Tabernash. The dispatcher has informed the train that they will be waiting for a little bit. The MNYRO has to set out a pair of cars on the house track at Fraser, and the crew will need to hold here in the meantime.
