As a westbound coal empty rolled by me, I started looking at things to take pictures of. This shot caught my eye...a wheel from an empty hopper quickly rolls over the railhead of a 136-pound rail forged in 1979 at Colorado Fuel & Iron! Would enjoy hearing what you think of this somewhat "artsy" shot.

A westbound coal empty continues its long trek toward the mine it'll load at. While most empties on the Moffat load on either the Craig Branch or the North Fork Branch, this empty will load at the Savage mine just outside Price, UT...across the Utah desert!

Just outside of Byers Canyon, UP's Board of Directors Special throttles up again to make track speed for the remainder of the journey to Kremmling. Trains make their way through Byers Canyon at 20 MPH, but passenger trains accelerate to 70 MPH once they are clear of the west end.

UP's Board of Directors Special snakes its way through the glorious Byers Canyon. The train is approaching the west end of the canyon. The river is running a bit low, which is common in the fall, at the base of the canyon.

After shooting the train at Granby, I was unable to catch it again until Byers Canyon. Between Granby and Sulpher, trains (passenger trains in particular) make very good time.

September is definitely upon us! It is just a bit past 6:00pm and the sun is getting pretty low in the western sky. The train still has a long journey ahead of it as it is headed for Metropolis, IL. However, it will take a break in Denver on the Belt Bypass tracks. There, its swing helpers will be cut out and the train will wait for a new crew which will take it east on the Limon Sub.

As I was waiting for an eastbound coal load along the Moffat in Arvada, I happened to notice that the rail closest to me was the same age as me! The rail was produced at CF&I (Colorado Fuel & Iron) in Pueblo. In the distance, headlights from the eastbound are visible.

At the east end of Byers Canyon, a UP light power move is just entering the canyon. These nine units are heading for Grand Junction (or more likely, Glenwood Springs), where they will be used as mid-train swing helpers for the trip back east over the divide to Denver.

While Byers Canyon may not be the most spectacular canyon the (former) Grande travels through, it still isn't something to just shrug off! There are constant 10-degree (read: very sharp) curves through the canyon and the sound of flanges on rail echo off the walls. Here, this coal empty is following the head waters of the Colorado River through the canyon.

This Drake coal empty is snaking through Byers Canyon as it approaches the west end. The "Drake" here is in reference to the Drake Power Plant in Colorado Springs which this unit train services. The train is headed for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch.

I've always liked this perspective looking east along the straight stretch of track through Arvada. I like the lines added by the leafless trees to the left. Oberon Road is just barely visible to the right; the intersection in the distance is Oberon and Carr Street.

An eastbound coal load heads down a long straight section of track between Carr Street and Pierce Street (roughly) in mid-Arvada. UP 7281 was the last [DPU] unit on the train and caught the light nicely on the way toward town.

Relatively nonthreatening clouds hang out over the eastern plains of Colorado as the Ski Train slowly passes east through Arvada on a yellow signal. Up ahead, the train will stop for a few minutes at CP 7.5 as a coal load (ahead of the Ski Train) slowly makes its way into Bypass Track Two at C&S Junction.

The Ski Train heads back toward Denver on its first run in Spring in 2007. Some of the grass in the Denver area is starting to show some signs a green, thanks to the very wet winter that we had earlier in the season. The Ski Train is crossing Carr Street, moving slowly on an Approach (yellow) signal.

It should be a great day for skiing up at Winter Park! Looks like the white stuff is falling over the mountains as the Ski Train hustles to get its passengers up to the slopes. The train is in between Carr Street and West 68th Avenue.
