In addition to its 105 empty hoppers, this train is shuttling some power that will be used as mid-train swing helpers based out of Glenwood Springs.

Looks like a company is treating its employees to a great day riding "First Class"! Individual tickets cannot be purchased for the last three cars on the train (the California, Utah and Kansas). The cars themselves must be rented as a set.

With the start of Daylight Savings Time, the extra hour of light in the evening makes a huge difference! There is still plenty of light at 5:45pm to capture the eastbound Ski Train as it crosses 68th Avenue in Arvada.

At this point in January, Colorado was having an unusually warm temperatures. There were a few record-breaking days that reached into the 70's! On one such day, BNSF's well-powered Stockton, CA to Denver, CO manifest approaches 72nd Avenue in Arvada not long before sunset.

This westbound BNSF unit tank train had a nice surprise on the tail end. A C44-9W was showing off its fantastic looking Warbonnet scheme. This really was the best looking Warbonnet I've seen in several years. The plow almost looked freshly painted!

BNSF's Pueblo to Provo train - consisting entirely of tank cars - had a nice black and white surprise in the consist! A fairly new Norfolk Southern ES40DC was sandwiched between two BNSF C44-9Ws for the trip west.

Running only about thirty minutes late, the westbound California Zephyr is working on clear signals just west of Byers Canyon. After moving cautiously through the canyon at 25 MPH, the train can now stretch its legs a bit and move up to the 70 MPH track speed.

Most of the C44-9Ws on BNSF's roster that wear the Warbonnet scheme are in the 600-series (BNSF 600-799). However, twenty units did make it into the 4000-series (BNSF 4000-5532) mix. Here is a roster shot of BNSF 4702, one of the somewhat rare units.

BNSF's Denver to Stockton (QDNSTJ) trackage rights train is facing a diverging approach (red over yellow) signal at the east end of Troublesome. After a good run up the hill from Denver, the train has to meet some maintenance equipment at Troublesome before continuing to Kremmling for a crew change.

The "powers that be" do a very good job of keeping either former Rio Grande or former Espee power on the Rocky Local. On this day, the local had a trio of fly letter (former) Espee GP40M-2s. These units have been on the local for a few weeks now. The train is about five miles away from North Yard.

Not too often these days that you find a mainline train where the power has spartan cabs across the board! That was exactly the case here though as the eastbound Rocky Local makes its way through the cut between Carr Street and 68th Ave in Arvada.

Seeing how these old signals are quickly on their way out, I wanted to make sure I got a shot of them before they inevitably disappear. In the pre-UP era, that lower target on the signal on the right would display a lunar aspect, indicating a grade (restricting) signal. Today, the yellow G-Plate has been added (indicating a grade signal), and the lower target displays yellow, for a yellow-over-yellow aspect, if a train is going in the hole at Leyden (Approach Diverging).

I'm always trying to look for new and different locations to shoot at. This one came to mind this afternoon! The eastbound coal load is crossing over Kipling Street just miles away from North Yard. Note the classic Rio Grande signals - some of the last between Denver and East Portal - on either side of the track.

At the time of the photo, there were less than two dozen unpatched Espee AC4400CW's left, most being the 100-199 number range. This number range is not equipped with DPU capabilities, and thus has had a lower patching priority.

An eastbound coal load, led by a Tier-1 compliant AC4400CW (known as a C44AC-CTE by GE), passes east through an area of Arvada that appears deceptively rural. This section of track is in between the grade crossing of 68th Avenue and Carr Street.
