Not too far north of Nunn on the Greeley Sub, a quartet of GEs has this southbound Z-Train on the move at track speed. Since PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading) has somewhat taken over several railroads, there are more "mixed" trains. Case-in-point is this Z-Train which has many auto racks on the front, and traditional stacks and pigs on the rear.

A southbound military train rolls north of the siding of Nunn. The equipment on the train is primary transport vehicles with tires rather than treads. Several trucks and tractors are also on the train, which is headed for Fort Carson in Colorado Springs.

It is a pretty rare sight to find BNSF orange on UP's Greeley Sub! In 2023, it seems that most lines, regardless of the owner, have at least one other railroad with trackage rights on their line. UP's Greeley Sub between Denver and Cheyenne is not one of those lines. UP is the owner and no other railroad has trackage rights. So these BNSF units must just be power sharing units on this northbound military train.

Just north of the siding of Nunn, we have an extremely unique northbound manifest on the Greeley Sub. A loaded military train, which originated at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs, is led by a pair of BNSF ES44C4s and an UP AC4400CW.

Just north of the small town of Nunn, NS 4004 and UP 7331 have 112 empty covered hoppers on the roll northbound. Not too far ahead and the dispatcher would give the train a high wind warning, with wind speeds up to 70 MPH reported. The empty trains "blow over" speed is 78 MPH, meaning the train will be able to continue to Cheyenne.

A local farmer in the small town of Nunn has erected a huge flag pole in his or her field. That flag offers a great backdrop as UP 844 charges north toward the US-85 overpass. Some people may wonder why a diesel engine is on the train. As powerful and amazing as UP 844 is, it alone does not have the power to keep the train moving at track speed. In order to keep the schedule, a diesel engine is added and throttles up (when needed) to assist UP 844.

UP 844 (along with UP 1989, the Rio Grande Heritage Unit) lead the Cheyenne Frontier Days train north out of Nunn. This is the first time since 2013 that the train has had steam on the point. It is also the first time since 2009 that I came to the tracks to shoot UP 844 on the train.

Four units that haven't seen revenue service in decades work together for Cheyenne Frontier Days. The E-units are only E-units on the outside. On the inside, they've been rebuilt and are now, in essence, GP38-2s. They are each rated at 2,000 horsepower. The DDA40X, on the other hand, is still rated at a full 6,600 horsepower.
