The unit now carries the designation SD40N, indicating that it has in fact gone through the rebuild program. UP 9006 is a "Tier-4 Credit Unit". UP, like many Class 1 railroads, used carbon credits to purchase some Tier-3 compliant units after the deadline. The engine spent the last few years undergoing a number of repairs. Whether or not some of those repairs were necessary is a matter of debate, and not one I'm going to get in to here as my knowledge of steam engines is virtually non-existent. If true, it means it is possible the massive DDA40X will no longer be able to run once one of those custom parts breaks. Whether these rumors are true or not, I'm an uncertain. We are just north of Platteville here as the train glides by. With no operable steam this year, UP used the E-units and the DD40AX for power.
