Running on time almost to the minute, Amtrak 6 passes the signal bridge at Pecos Street running on a clear signal on Main 3. Although most of the sky is overcast, there is enough of a gap to the west to allow for some nice silhouette lighting to sneak through.

In the 1980s, Santa Fe ran a high priority intermodal from Big Lift (south of Denver on the Joint Line) to La Juanta. The train was symboled QDVLJ and QLJDV. It was very common for this train to run with GP30s, GP35s and GP39-2s. Some twenty years later, it was a nice surprise to find a GP30 and a GP35 - both wearing the Yellow Bonnet - heading to town from the Golden Spur.

BNSF's Pueblo to Provo manifest is rather short on this Saturday afternoon. An H2 and a Warbonnet lead the train west at the Pecos Crossover. The train is running on clear signals on Main 3.

A westbound BNSF Pueblo to Provo manifest starts its run west on UP trackage. The tail end of the train has just cleared the crossover from BNSF trackage to UP trackage at Utah Junction.

Amtrak had been having some power issues between Chicago and Denver. So, in Denver, a third P42DC (which is kept in Denver as a spare for just such situations) was added to the train. The Zephyr is coming around on the North Yard siding on the approach to Pecos Street and the Pecos Crossover.

A colorful Stockton to Denver (MSTODEN) comes down Main 3 on the approach to the Pecos Crossover. At Utah Junction, the train will stop and meet Amtrak 5. Amtrak will take the North Yard siding from Utah Junction west to C&S Junction. Then, this train will head down the main to Fox Junction and cross over to its own tracks.

This shot offers an interesting comparison of paint schemes. The lead unit - A C44-9W - sports the Heritage 2 scheme. This is still the most dominate BNSF scheme on the railroad. Next up is a second C44-9W, but this units wears the original Heritage scheme. Last but not least is an ES44DC with the New Image scheme. The train is at milepost 4.25 on the Moffat Tunnel Sub.

A westbound BNSF trackage rights train carries an interesting train symbol with it. The train is the MAKRPVO - the Akron to Provo manifest. First time I had ever heard of this particular train on the Moffat. Sometimes, BNSF will stage trains outside major yards and use the staging location as the originating terminal in the train symbol. I suspect that may have been the case here.

UP's only daily eastbound manifest on the Moffat, the MPVNY, comes down the North Yard Siding with instructions to tie the train up on Track 3. A coal empty sits on Bypass 1, waiting for a crew to take it west.

An eastbound coal load passes through the crossover at Pecos Street. The coal train, on Bypass 2, is approaching the grade crossing at Pecos, no doubt preparing to frustrate dozens of drivers on Pecos as the crossing is blocked!

Passengers aboard Amtrak 5 enjoy the view (well, for what it is worth at this particular location!) from the Lounge car as the train heads west on Main 3 toward C&S Junction and the far-more-scenic Moffat Tunnel Sub.

The westbound California Zephyr with ATMK 79 on the point heads west on a clear signal at the Pecos Street Crossover. With Amtrak actually running just about on time, the sun was still rather low in the eastern sky!

Just about the only train to use the Belt Bypass tracks aside from coal trains are specials such as this one. The SOACB crosses over from the Moffat to the Belt Lead using Bypass Track One. Note the stadium seating in the back of the last car on the train.

Each Spring, UP moves its passengers cars from their winter home in Oakland, CA to their summer home in Council Bluffs, IA. The last few years, the special move (designated the SOACB) has come over the Grande rather than the Overland. UP didn't exactly pick the most pristine power for the trip, with a faded UP shield on the front of UP 4784.
